A Ural, 1 Year Later
So... On Feb 17, 2012 I became a foilhead with the purchase of my "Franken-Ural". She is a 1997 Sportsman with a 2008 engine, transmission and final drive . She had 30,750 on the klock when I rode her away from Holopaw Gene's.
Today (02-16-2013) I turned over 45,300 as I rode to Gene's and back for something to do! So... How has my Ural experience for the last year been?? Major issues; -Bad starter. Replaced under warranty by Gene -Broken clutch cable. Replaced on the side of the road with a spare. Minor issues; - Loose wiring. Secured with zip ties and wire loom - 1 or 2 bad bulbs. Replaced - Final drive breather puke. Modded with a hose. - Bad relay. Replaced Self induced issues; -Broke windshield. Fixed -Bent fender. Fixed FWIW, I ride it. On road and off. I don't baby it, nor do I abuse it ('cept for this one time in the forest). |

Howdy Paint Shaker,
You had should sell that RPOS before it blows up on ya, better yet have bokad tell you what a mistake you made in buying it. Seriously, glad your having fun say "Howdy" from me to Gene the next time you see him.

No wonder.......it's from Gene of Holopaw
Paint shaker,
Sounds like you have really scored on another ''used ural'' from Gene. Some would run from that age but knowing how Gene is the Ural guy & likes to keep his & even other ''ural dealer's'' customers riding/happy, I really am not surprised. Would have loved to look over Gene's shoulder during his 'go over' of your rig. If you ever make it to Jax, contact me before hand & will be glad to show you a few good trails & a good road side Bar BQ joint. BRO & I really thought about getting an older ural from Gene, but the rig is passed around so much that it just isn't a local bike. But wanted that outstanding factory 2 year warranty. Still haven't used it yet, the warranty. Keep up the good riding. |

Paint,
Enjoyed your post about the good visit with Gene at Holopaw. I'm going to stop by his shop and have him give my Yamal a check over on the way to the Flea Market Sidecar Show, March 14th at Bike Week. I adjusted the sidecar alignment and Gene said he would check/adjust my work plus he should have some more Harley police seat brackets in by then.

FWIW,
Gene had a 1998 Ural in the shop that he was putting a later model motor/trans/final drive in (2007 I believe) ![]() I've put roughly 15,000 miles on the hack in the last year. I've changed the oil, trans fluid and final drive fluid a bunch of times. Adjusted the brakes a few times, spooned on one set of tires and generally just rode the piss out of it!! ALWAYS have a good time on it. Thus far it has not went Bokad on me. But if it does, I'll get it fixed and ride on!!!

Thanks for the invite to the conversation Cob! How is your kool-aid tasting these days?
And if ya can't tell the difference between my argument about paying the price for a new one and getting a cheap used one then I just can't help... Urals are great! Pure quality! 70+ years of excellence! That's sarcasm by the way. Glad Paint shaker has bee lucky with his. Not everyone is. This new one made it a whole 1500 miles before a major failure and final drive replace! http://www.sovietsteeds.com/forums/v...hp?f=5&t=26840 bokad screwed with this post 02-20-2013 at 06:59 AM |

Regardless of others, if it works for you that's good enough and should be respected. Full stop.
However, will this become another page devouring saga ? |

I've read Bokad's thread. Even commented there. Realized I was incorrect on some of my information, manned up and moved on.
EVERY motor vehicle company has produced lemons. Mine just happens to NOT be one of them. It may break at some point (like any other mechanical thing might). If it does, I'll fix it. Until such time, I'll continue to ride and watch the klicks turn! |

Great post.
I see more reliability "issues", flukes and breakdowns on the BMW forum areas myself. Quite fond of the Ural simplicity. Lots of smiles per mile (kilometer I mean ). WHAT other motorcycle ever came with a canoe paddle? |
