Old Helmets
Do you folks just toss them? I have some old ones can't imagine anyone would ever want to use them but for some reason just putting them in a trash can seem so weird .

I have heard the suggestion that you offer them to your local EMS or hospital for training purposes. Who knows someday the person they have to remove a helmet from might be you.

It does seem weird to just toss them in the trash.
That's why I have "garage ornaments".

or just put them on ebay.
If they are 70-80's vintage helmets they can go for a ton of loot on ebay. Lots of guys are buying them and relining them and custom paint.. and selling them for 4-500 dollars |

I don't buy helmets as often as I should and sure don't take very good care of them so if I do put one in the trash I cut the chin strap off just to keep it from being used again.

Interesting thread
I have accumulated a few myself. I generally toss the old MX helmets but I have a few Scorpion EXO helmets in great shape that I never wear. they just take up room but I don't want to just throw them away. I may sell them.

Got tired of staring at an old helmet just this week.
Cut off the straps (helmet was way beyond being usable anymore) and threw it out. |

+1 for this. Working in the fire / EMS field now, I have come to realize that there are only very few training dollars to go around, and a lot of ground to cover. That said, any freebies that you throw to your local dept (be it a helmet, old fire extinguisher, or whatever), WILL be put to good use. Worst case scenario is that whoever is on shift takes advantage of a unique training opportunity and learns some lessons without compromising your spinal cord in the process.
