Bordering russia-expenditure of time

Hi!
Tomorrow i will do my paperwork about visa. I live in the north of Sweden so a dayride through Finland to Russia is a good dayride.

Still, can´t spend lot of time at the Russian border and I´m worried about the time when doing the paperwork at the Russian toll. Have to make plans for the overnight.

So, do people now the time it takes at the borders(both Finland and Russia) when getting into Russia nowadays?
Also, is the borderingtime different depenting of where you border?

The border stations in the south-east are the busiest and they might get quite crowded in the Russian holiday seasons.

Vaalimaa and Nuijamaa get the most traffic, Kuusamo-Suoperä the least. But on normal weekday it shouldn't make a big difference where you make the crossing.

1-2 hours should get you through, Russian customs are sometimes a bit unpredictable though.

If you don't speak Russian it's a good idea to check the English version of the customs declaration form beforehand, makes it easier to fill the form at the border: http://eng.customs.ru/images/stories...es/english.pdf

I've never crossed into Russia from Finland, but have several times from Ukraine and Latvia. At this point I can usually enter Russia in about 45 minutes, but I know how to fill out the forms, etc. Leaving Russia is even quicker--about 15 minutes.

On a bike, the key is to ride to the front of the line. I've been told that this is the "etiquette" and indeed no one has ever objected to me doing so.

The second key is to fill in the forms properly the first time, so that you don't have to correct them and wait in line again (even if you cut to the front of the line of cars waiting to cross, there is still people in line in front of the windows to turn in the forms, and you can't really cut in front of them too!).

I also agree that things can be a bit unpredictable; for instance, some border crossings close for lunch, which can obviously impact your waiting time!

Thank´s Oldbear and motoreiter Much planning is nothing I´m used to do, but sometimes needs to do that...

Have only 450kms to border so your answers gives an attempt to ride to Kostamus first day and the second day to Petrozavodsk.

We(two bikes, two person) did the paperwork for visa yesterday.

If there are any comments about road etc etc about bordering via Kostamus and further to Petrozavodsk, so please fill in.......

It went out well. Took 45 minutes at Kostamus to get into Russia.(wednesday) and 1 hour at Lapinranta to get back to Finland(wednesday).
There was at Lapinranta a very long que with cars, but we past all them...otherwhise I´m sure it had taken many many hours....
