Hi I have returned, a while ago I was on here parading an xl250, then I disappeared and went competing in trials on a gasgas 280, I am now back with an XL600LMH that I have just picked up, question is can anyone help me date the bike, it has been imported into the uk so the log book isn't accurate

Hi, Coincidence is I just jumped in the deep end myself and possibly with same bike - mine is an '87 Xl600LM (but not sure about the 'H' that follows or how to tell). I am in UK also and only picked it up 4 days ago. I did have a quick look and chassis number says :- PDO4-5204693 if that helps. Hope yours is running ok - mine not even started yet due to spark/no spark mystery.

Giocast mine is a pd04 not sure about the lmh designation, mine is a runner with MOT

Spark/no spark, do all the cheap stuff first, check all connections, new plug , disconnect the kill switch, new plug cap, plug lead , coil, cdi and then stator !!

Check continuity of all the wires whilst giving them a wiggle

intermittent faults are always the worst to find

Hi Doc - really pleased to get your replies as precious little interest on 'Thumpertalk'. Good to hear yours is up and running - I can't wait to hear mine. I have swotted up massively but will be interested on your thoughts :- Spark is adequate to strong using kickstart but NOTHING when churning on starter.. I have a bad knee hence the XL purchase. I am tending to think it must be stator now but a real mystery for me at the moment.

Hi Doc - yours looks rather good and almost identical to mine with the bigger tank. Quite rare apparently and same bore/stroke as XR. I heard that many CDI's will work in place of the original spec so might buy a new one for a kick-off.

try a decent battery or failing that a pair of jump leads from a car battery. seems very odd that it will spark on the kick but not the elctric start, can only be that it is not spinning it fast enough.

done that Doc - it's deeper than this.. battery is A1 and cranking fast. I am just starting to go through all connectors now but was hoping for a (lazy) short cut as it's cold out there (plus I just fell on my a*** in the rain/oil - great!)

Glad to hear you got it running Giocast. What was the problem? Fyi a cdi from an nx650 should work. At least it does in my Xl600rmg.

thanks Doc - it was a mystery - I talked to the last owner which helped as he told me he'd just parked it up with no problems at the time so I went through every ignition joint in the hope that this would help. All I bought was a starter solenoid - new made in Malaysia which was a good price but had Battery/Motor connections reversed! (that Honda lot eh?) which threw me for a while. Just about to cough up on CDI/Stator and suddenly I had spark while cranking! put the plug lead on and it coughed on first churn - fantastic

next step is swapping over into XR frame plus loom/lights etc. Can't wait!



EDIT I love those XL rims with tubeless tyres - what a clever idea. I will probably transfer these as well as they have 'road' tyres on.

Check inside your rims for corrosion, they have a tendency to corrode over time.
