Those were some bad years for Chevy. One other thing to look at is the VATS system, or pass key, whatever Chevy calls it, but it's the anti theft system. They used a few different systems. One system has a resistor in the ignition tumbler, so it will not allow the car to start unless the key actually turns the ignition, and won't work if it's busted out, so it can't be hot wired. They tend to fail, bad connections usually. If it senses an attempted start, but the resistor value isn't read then it stops any attempt to start for 15 minutes. The easy fix is to permanently wire a resistor close to the body control module to bypass it.
I don't know if that is the system your truck has, but it's worth looking at. You can google it, it is well documented out there on the internet.

If you need the cluster rebuilt try these guys.
Had a Corvette hvac panel fixed by them. Good work.

In case it is the gauge cluster when my 2003 Chevy 2500 needed the cluster rebuilt I used this guy.
