Experimental, sure, but I'd hardly call the Voyager homebuilt.

Let's just say that it's as homebuilt as a Lancair.......

I'm not sure about different distance record categories so is this flight really a record? In 1979 Dick Rutan flew a Long-EZ 4900 miles in a closed course and set the record. At takeoff he had 143.6 gallon of fuel and got 35 MPG. This guy flew the Lancair ~4500 miles.

http://v2.ez.org/cp23-p3.htm

The Long-EZ is very impressive - max speed 185MPH, cruise speed 144MPH, and 2010 miles range on 52 gallons.

Small world...

Yesterday I was talking to my coworker who told me about his acquaintance who had helped him build his RV-8 a few years ago. He said he was on his way to HI from IN! We logged into that site just as he was landing in HI. Looks like he just made it to Guam.

Did he say that they built/modified it for long range, high efficiency?

I don't think he knows any specifics about this plane, just that the guy was really interested in this type of long distance flying.

There is that...

I'm guessing they had to jump through all kinds of hoops after yanking the piston engine and bolting a turbine to the firewall of this Beechcraft.

You're kidding, right?

I don't know who built the Lancair in question but I am 100% confident they aren't Burt Rutan. I can't believe we are comparing Scaled Composites to some guy that has to ask his wife to park the minivan in the driveway so his fuselage can cure in the garage.

Also, if you check Flightaware, you will see the Lancair is now in-flight Guam to Jacksonville.

No, I'm not kidding....There are plenty of professional shops building EXP airplanes, flying off the 40 hours and selling to a customer. Not on the scale of Rutan but professional non the less.
