Finally back home the weather was cool so the 100 mile journey was kept relatively in the good zone of the temperature gauge, but have to head back to Oxford tomorrow in the car to grab all my stuff Sunday I hope will be okay for me to start working on her, cooling and chain adjusting is all that needs to be done for now until I get some funds to start working on her more.

I was out riding today and ran across this NC30 when I stopped for coffee. This bike was immaculate and had 23,xxx miles on it. I believe it is a 1991 model. I chatted with the owner a long time. I love Honda's V4's - all of them. I am envious of yours Kennon. The British bike mag Bike did a big article on 400's in the last year. Worth a read if you can find it.

Cheers dave, yeah i'm loving the bike but I need so many specific tools to do basic maintenance, the Bike you saw was a NC35 Honda RVF 400 the updated version of my bike I have the wheels off one as they're more diserable size being 17's not 17/18, they also had a lesser developed single side swingarm and carbs that had better midrange but are down by 7bhp.

Neat lil bikes. I use to import new ones back in the 90's. Here's the last one I owned.

had to take out the left cover off as the headlight is further ahead just enough to make the cover pop out abit I actually quite happy about the one headlight cover look works abit better at night aswell.

My mate has one in Sydey, Australia. I've been lucky enough to have a ride or two of it.

The engine is unbelievable. It is so smooth and the gear driven cams with that V4 rumble... It is the best sounding bike I have ever heard.

Here's a short clip of it going through a very nice enclosed tunnel:

Just because I was a little confused, I did a little reading:

NC-21 VFR400R 1986-1987 (Replaced VF400F)
NC-24 VFR400R 1987-1988 (first ELF SSSA)
NC-30 VFR400R 1989-1992
NC-35 RVF400R 1994-1996

Sadly, none ever imported (officially) to the USA, although some made it here anyway. Many of us here would give up a lot to have an NC-30 or NC-35 - with some source of Honda parts for them, of course.

Apart from Japan a few countries got a very small batch of VFR400's the "UK which had a oil cooler, UK spec light module and unrestricted full power engine, VFR 750 mirrors and a full power unrestricted engine.

France and Germany got some aswell but were fitted with larger headlights to meet requirements all these official European NC30's are very rare to come across now as many UK ones became race bikes and sold very badly due to costing the same price as a 750.

Yes, the V4 is an expensive engine to build, whether it is a 400 or a 750 or a 1200.

And yes, those of us who like smaller, lighter bikes and who are also willing to pay top dollar for high quality components are very rare indeed.

There are several threads on ADVRider that make this point. Most of us just have to build our own. I have't yet, because I can't find the right donor platform to avoid trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The CB-1 (NC-27) comes the closest, but the swing arm is an obstacle. Oh, well. Maybe the new Yamaha Triples will offer some opportunities.

i'm learning the hard way that they're expensive too keep maintained and running right, need the small capacity market back and I mean 4 pots not singles or twins dressed to look like sports bikes.
