Bringing back an Aprilia 280R...

One or two of you might remember my asking someone to look at a bike in Flagstaff last Aug. Even if you don't remember, I made the deal for a complete runner & a basket case for the tidy sum of $600. Delivered south of Indy, it was my excuse to catch the Indy Mile & MotoGP, so I was on my way.

Fast forward to now, & I'm just now getting off me arse to get this thing going. Truth is, I went to the Fun 'n Sun STRA event at Hard Rock last weekend, & it lit a fire. But that's another conversation. On with the program.

Out of the garage after six months. Look close at the grime, doesn't show so good here.



The black gunk is fork oil that has been leaking for a decade or so.


Parts bike. I haven't inventoried yet, but supposed to be a complete bike there. Lots of stuff in the blue box.


After a half gallon of Simple Green, some tenacity,& lots of elbow grease, I ended up with this.

Not a huge difference in the pics, I know. But in real life...

Oh, where did all that fork oil go? Here.


I'm on my way to replacing the fork seals & front brake pads. More to report & visualize later.

Buy fork seals for your Climber in bulk as they don't last long. That's a bike that is notorious for QSD (quick seal death)

The parts bike you have looks like it may be a diferent year and some of the parts changed year to year. I had a 280R Climber and my forks seals leaked too. Mike at the Tryals shop has a trick that may help them last longer and still has some parts in stock including some new plastics.

Good luck with it - they have a great rotax motor.

Im doing the same thing here right now. What a coincidence!

As Im lacking any kind of documentation for the bike, could you please make a LOT of pics the fork-rebuild? Also, a hint about the amount of fork oil would be greatly appreciated.

Fork help

Almost definite that the climbers used the Marzocchi 36mm USD forks Maybe the 35mm fork?
Stock they had like 250-260cc of oil, 5wt and 20wt (20 on the damper side I think)
here's Schnells link to the 36mm which was also used on the early GasGas bikes during the USD craze.

wish mine was in as good nick as your!
took it apart today after noticing a rattle, hoping it was a little end bearing. found out both ends need replacing. shot to bits!
going to be expensive!

I have just made an complete overhaul to the motor of my SWM which is too a Rotax model.
The rebuild will not be more expensive then rebuilding a Bultaco or Yamaha and parts are still available.

Get a good manual and parts list and watch out for the Rotax BRP parts salespoint in your country, parts are often
easier to find, less expensive and to order there then at vintage parts dealer.

I think you're right. I pulled the seat & tank off today, & the frame is completely different. I found some other issues, but while documenting everything I made the mistake of using my pocket camera for images. Everything is awefull out of focus. I'll retake everything with the DsLR tomorrow.

With what I've found, I'm making progress. Glad I didn't just replace the fork seals & pads & go riding. More on on that later.

+ @ mike at the tryals shop, He took over just after aprilia quit. Before you ride that thing I would check the jetting. Also the `91 kickstarter was much easier on the leg if it is still there. Great bikes! Major downfall was when the right side mains went bad. Would end up taking out the stator/and or flywheel. The magnets would get knocked off the flywheel. Made in slovania.

Here we go with new pics.

To the bone. Sort of.



Different frame. Not that it matters. It's not like I'm competing in the USGP WTC.



And here's why I'm glad I didn't take it for a ride. As a routine check I opened the rear master cylinder.



And then there's this. The green tube with the white connector on the lower right is supposed to be connected with the black tube on the upper left. This is the rear brake line. Not important or anything. Amazing the bike stopped when I test rode it.

Now I need some help. Today I thought I'd disassemble the forks & get them ready for seal replacement. First order was to remove the caps. Lo & behold, upon unscrewing, nothing happened. I expected a spring to give pressure & come out, but no. Once the threads let loose, it was as though something was holding the cap in place. Being one to not compound ignorance, I screwed the caps back into place. These are different from my RM forks, & obviously I'm in over my head here. So...

Where can I send them to have them rebuilt?

Some trials forks only had a spring in one side. Not sure if this is the case with your bike or not but worth a look.
