Some of the scenery between from todays ride to La Lajitas (Laja means slate, flagstone, slab) from El Fuerte.

The crossroads. This is where I aired down. Looks like there will be NO pavement for a few days from this point on.

Old church just melting away....

Cheech and Chong were behind the palm trees offering us a big old blunt! No thanks, we need our faculties intact!

Scenery is improving with every mile. Road is well graded and easy going.

The Hotel at La Lajitas. I think they said they hadn't seen a tourist in a year. I don't think they had dusted for about that long either.

IMGP2315.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

The inn keeper used a big knife to open our door.

IMGP2317.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Couple of nice new houses (big) seemed out of place

IMGP2320.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Basic accommadations, shared toilet, door wouldn't open all the way as the bed was in the way. Electricity was off at night so had to use the braille method to find the bathroom (garden actually was easier to find) and back to the room.

IMGP2322.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Typical bathroom (had hot - warm water here)

IMGP2323.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Mike got his tail bag sewn by the inn keeper.

IMGP2327.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Inn keeper lady asked how many chickens we wanted for dinner, 3 between the 5 of us sounded about right. Felt kind of bad sending these birds to slaughter, but hey, you got to eat.

Secure parking in back, she said it wasn't safe to leave them in front....

IMGP2337.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

About 10 local guys, 3 with ak-47's, built us a nice oak fire and hung out with us all evening. Otherwise we would have gone to bed at 7:00. It was chilly. Got down to near freezing at night, no heat or insulation in the rooms.

IMGP2341.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

The guys with ak-47's and the guy we saw earlier in the day guarding the road seem to be local vigilantes. I asked if I could take a photo but they politely declined. They kept a careful watch on any trucks that happened to drive through. Their radios were pretty active also, must have had outposts spread out along the road. You can do some independant study here.

You will never convince me that the girl playing the gitar on page three that Chabon mentions that I like was not looking right into my eyes the entire time. She is GOOOOD. I guess Jesica must have helped me out of the broken chair befor any one could document my first fall over. Ken and Doug are doing such a good job with the RR that I just want to observe. I can't remember where the local gay pride guy had his welcome out for our leader but we did see him twice. Sort of like stalking a prey sort of deal.

Excellent RR! And riding and or hanging out with El Burt the man can't be much better.

Dang! I could have made this one as all I been doing is sitting and hibernating trying to stay warm and make through t winter.

Had to chuckle that Mike is still wearing those coveralls and helmet.

Please continue....

Winner.........winner..........Chicken Dinner.........

I think it was Burt that said 3 chickens would be enough. Did you ever watch "Land of the Gorch" on SNL the first season?

Before the fire some monkeys visited......

We had another great breakfast from that wood fired stove and continued our trip with a chilly morning and bright son.

Most of the mornings constituted a climb out of a valley but not this morning, we had spent the night at 5600 ft. We are headed to Morelos, try to find it on the Google map (good luck) with an ascent of 7100 ft and a descent of 10.600 ft. It's only 50 miles but our leader cautions us not to try to get to Batapilas in one day. And that is the better choice....the road we should have taken.

but the road we took that cost us an hour of tough riding around Palomas.
