We took a coffee break at this junction, there was some traffic along these roads and you did need to be a bit careful when approaching a blind corner.

Another stop at a memorial to get rid of the coffee.........

Grand vistas........

And another road we shouldn't have taken.

This rugged road was scenic but not where we should be headed.

Burt turned 3 of us around but Mike got out in front and waited at the next intersection. He should have been flagged down but we waited at the last intersection which was a burned out ranchero with a stunning view. We won't speculate what happened there but Mike did the right thing and backtracked to us.

I've had a conversation regarding bigger bikes for the slab and how they would fare in the backcountry. I would have enjoyed a 990Adv on this trip but I question how I would have fared when we had all the switchbacks and elevation changes. More on that later......

We still have a ways to go today.

This is not the destination..........yet........

Mornin' Gregg....

Looking back is a good thing.......occasionally......

And our destination is in sight.

Burt gets us to our Hotel and we begin to unpack.

This was the spot of our miscue....one of us took a photo of the CP without permission (you won't get it) and they confiscated his camera. After much negotiation and many apologies, the photo was deleted, all his photos were reviewed and the camera was returned. This also led to an English speaking translator who visited and we cooperatively answered a battery of questions. If a group of 5 foreigners visited my neighborhood like this, I'm not sure they would have been treated this well.......just sayin'.......

Chabon and I went looking for internet....they have it, but it's satellite, slower than a phone modem and didn't support Skype. This would turn out to be another common theme. But the kids were great! I don't think this town sees many Americanos and they were a blast.

I think this is when I proposed a ride theme: Americanos esta Amigos (Don't shoot me). Later learned that second phrase could be no dispararme.

There was construction and the town was thriving.

We did fill up on barrel gas which led to an overflow on my bike. I thought my front tank would hold 10 liters but 8 was the limit. The 690e has a rear tank that gets restricted access when carrying a tail bag. It also doesn't like the Magna nearly as much as the Premium gasolina. While in the backcountry, we only had Magna and I noted a significant difference in the bike's performance. Wonder how the 990 would accommodate.....

BTW, I'm wearing long, black nylon pants now due to having a flock of 'noseeums' chew my legs up in El Fuerte. They mostly healed by the end of the trip but I got ate up, that lily white skin was too tempting for them to miss.....

I have one last shot of Morelos that evening. No dinner or b'fast pics....somebody else will need to fill in....plus I remember taking a photo of Chabon with the kids.....we finally had to tell them to vamonos, they would have stayed with us all night....

SLC started this morning at 25F and is all the way up to 41F right now......another reason not to go for a ride today.......

Yes! absolutely. I do not want to do another winter here. after Hawaii and traveling south of the border I am spoiled.

Brad: I think it doesn't take much to persuade your dad to cross the Border again.

You know once I stumbled across this RR I started whimpering like a dog forced to stay in the back

I so could have done this.

I am sending a PM with my contact info. I have a new Phone #

Persuading him to come back is the hard part..

Scheduling conflict, or I would have been in this reindeer game.

Next time..

The Day of the Jackal

Re-kindled the fire in the morning to take the chill off, while our breakfast was being prepared

A few miles on this old stove, but out some nice heat also

IMGP2346.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

On the road again for Morelas

IMGP2350.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

A little 'seperation' anxiety while we waited to regroup.

Have you been in Mexico too long when you salivate every time you see a goat?

IMGP2359.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Easy days ride, roads still in good shape. Our destination for the night

IMGP2361.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Three guys with automatic weapons showed up shortly after we arrived and took up positions on the rooftop to the left of this picture. One of the guys wanted a picture of this and thought they wouldn't know if he took the photo from their backsides. I thought it would be a good idea to make myself scarce at this point and disappeared to my room.

IMGP2362.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Guess they saw him, because as I was walking out of the shower they arrived at my door for 'the nude interogation'. I actually had a towel on but I just like to say 'nude interogation'. Asked a bunch of questions through an interpreter.. where are you coming from, where are you going, why are you here, who are the guys you are with, very calm and proffessional. The only bad part was the guy with the gun looked down at my legs and laughed. Probably never seen such white legs!

Time to go see the town. Kids all wanted photos

IMGP2364.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

IMGP2365.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

The pictures had been deleted from the offending camera and I offered up my camera if they wanted to check it, but they didn't. Maybe some day these guys will find out that it is very easy to 'undelete and unformat' memory cards. The photos remain deleted, no attempt was made to recover them!!!

The resturant next to the hotel (and rooftop perch). There was a really good ice cream place a little up this road (200 ft.) on the right side. Try when you go here. No good internet in this town. Too slow to be useful.

This is the hill we need to cross tomorrow.

IMGP2367.JPG by DDMcGinnis, on Flickr

Tomorrow we push on to Batopilas.

I have no pictures of the food in Morelos, I think after the camera confiscation, and being told I could not take any pictures of people I keep my camera in my pocket, ok food but after the incident, all the locals knew we were to be avoided, and kind of gave us strange looks, glad to be gone. On to Batopilas

"Have you been in Mexico too long when you salivate every time you see a goat?"

Uh....that question about drooling when you see a goat????

I think that your intentions regarding your activity with the goat will determine the answer.....

You can always explain to the judge that you were simply trying to help the goat over the fence

Elevation Plots

Used a relatively new to me Montana 600 on this trip. Worked pretty good. Still learning all the functions, plus learning Basecamp and Windows 8! Here are a couple elevation plots now that we are heading into the hills...
