I'd go with the Honda CR-V before the Mazda, but I'm not sure they make it in a stick shift anymore.

2012/2013's are very comfortable on highway trips, and the driver's seat adjusts up and down in addition to the other directions (so I guess taller people could fit into one).

If you want speed in that "CUV" market, I think you have to go to the higher-end CUV's, like maybe Acura or Cadillac, where they have V6's (or maybe turbos on their 4's).

The wife and I just picked up our 2014 CX-5 Sport this evening. So far only about 100 miles logged but we were impressed with the mazda from the start. The base model does a good job of having enough options that you don't feel like you are driving a stripped down cheap car, and the quality of the interior materials is quite good for a base model.
We opted for the 6 speed manual, the shift throws are short and smooth and the clutch is great.
My one complaint is that there are almost zero options available with the manual, we would have really liked to been able to have bluetooth integration and a color other than black, gray, or silver.
Here is a crappy picture I took as it was getting dark.
