Miata - find a well cared for used one. Sink a few grand in aftermarket go-fast bits. Save $$$$ towards additional bikes & toys.

This is what he is looking at.

1. Morgan 3 wheeler (new)
2. Caterham 7 or any of the copies (used of course)
3. Lotus Elise or Extige (used)
4. M3 (used) - not so unique
5. Porsche speedster replica
6. Ford Model T speedster chop?
Which one says bland cheap japanese cars? The S2000 is kind of cool but it is still a mass market fairly practical car. From the list, I don't see anything but the BMW M3 that would be used as a daily driver. Even the M3, though has a character much more interesting than any of the boring middle aged safe midlife crisis cars.

If there was a remake of the Prisoner, do you think they'd use a Miata or a BRZ or even an S2000? I could see an Ariel Atom.

OK so a mid life crisis eh? So hopefully it is short lived and doesn't affect your home life much (my wife is going through this right now...ugh).

Purchase something that will resell easily once you are over your affliction. Once you own a car like this you either hang with it forever or you pay/play/parlay. That said, something that will sell quick:

Porsche 911
DeTomaso Pantera

Most of the ones you list are cool but resale will suck and you will take a big hit (that verbally you will pay years for). At least the ones listed above are easy to sell, in your price range and should do the job quite well.

Yeah, a planned mid-life crisis with an exit clause. How fun.

I personally find the Caterham a bit ugly, along the lines of an MG TC or something, but that's just me. A great track car, for sure, but it doesn't sound like that is your intent.

1st choice: The Morgan 3-wheeler. It is one of the most unique things produced in recent history. I have never seen one in person. It would also leave some room in the garage, being so small.

2nd choice: Lotus Elise. Great handling, dead reliable, but there are a few of them out there. Not quite as unique as the Morgan.

You could also build something. I met a guy at the autocross with a 29 Ford that he put an entire Suabaru STi drivetrain into. It even had the mass airflow sensor sticking out of the hood. It sounds like you want to drive it, rather than build it, so I would go with the Morgan.

Go ahead, take away my midlife crisis values i thought a bland cheap Japanese car was a Yaris, not a BRZ. Guess it depends on how deep one's pockets are.

damn, who knew that I would get all the chicks if I got that Mazda 2? What was I thinking?

Did you notice his qualification "different/unique"?

The women are attracted to your Mazda because they think you'd make a good girlfriend they can go shopping with.

I sat in a new Morgan 3 wheeler today and a Birkin "Caterham clone"- I am a bit -umm- tall for the Morgan. But, The newest ones have a pedalbox that moves back a bit more. The Birkin had a 210HP Duratec - I bet the think flys. It felt good but wasn't finished nearly as nice as the Morgan. Morgan would probably hold value longer? The wait time is approx. 14 months. Should I pull the trigger?

I don't have a Miata, I have a BRZ. You are up in the Bay area, I understand you must see that a lot. Not that there is anything wrong with that.:loll

With only 3,000 BRZs per year, you don't exactly see them coming and going.

Subaru initially expected to sell 6,000 units of its new 2013 Subaru BRZ rear-wheel-drive 2+2 sports car annually, but demand for the car is strong enough that the company will receive an additional 2,000 units to sell during the next 4 months, bringing first-year volume to 8,000 units. Subaru of America COO Tom Doll told Automotive News, "We are selling all the BRZs we can get. We have been sold out of the car since it was introduced."
really?
