if the M3 is too boring, get the same drivetrain in the M coupe.

if i wanted a small, fast and fun car, i would get an atom. your still out in the weather, but it goes better, turns better, and stops better than the morgan. it doesn't look as good, but its not like it looks like a turd either. i think even if i had both in the garage i would get in the atom over the morgan, every time. so the atom would be more useful to me.

40k gives you a lot of choices and you have a great list. Definitely go with whatever puts the biggest smile on your face. I like the Lotus Elise/Exige and would also consider a Pantera or Ferrari 328 if it is a purely weekend car.

I just bought my own mid life crisis car - 89 911 in guards red. I took the "buy a red Porsche" advice. These cars are bulletproof, you see few on the road and I can take to work on nice days. Not a bad commuter.

Good luck!

That's pretty funny, and so true. When I was contemplating a small car purchase I seriously considered an original 1275 Cooper S. Not single person I discussed my rationale in going with a Smart, from Mini Mania (who just so happened to have the last Remus exhaust for a 2008 Smart Cabrio available in America) to my two brothers who between them have owned 10 Minis needed needed any further explanation when I said "I live in New York City, I don't have anyplace I can work on it."

The Mini is a great car, the GT-6 is a piece of crap.

Oh get the Caterham, without question. It will run circles around pretty much anything on the road and the best part is that it's unique. For gods sake please dont go and be another one of those Boxster guys.... Please? If I see another Boxster with a middle aged white guy in it, Im going to stab myself in the face with a fork.
Also, dont forget that when it lapped the Top Gear track it nearly set the lap record....

it will out accelerate, out handle, out stop just about every car on earth except a very short list that cost 100 times what this does.

took me awhile to find it, but here is the vid link...

Mine turned out to be a 1999 Buick LeSabre. I made some bad choices in retrospect.

Great suggestion with the cooper but I already have a hopped-up classic mini with a 1275 and lots of go fast parts. Not giving the mini up. Caterham, Morgan - Morgan, Caterham. A used R500 is a bit expensive, R300/R400 or the roadsport -hmm. Oh, here is my favorite Caterham video.

The video says it all!

it's pretty hard to beat the Caterham from all angles...... I'd already have one if I had the money but alas Ill have to wait until my own personal midlife crisis... so....

Plus; how cool would it be to order the kit and put it together?!

That was a great video.

What is the power to weight ratio in that thing? It looks a bit faster than my muscle car, but probably handles a lot better with less than half the weight (closer to 1/3 actually). Is there room in your budget for speeding tickets?

That would be the better track car, where the Morgan 3 would be better for putting around the Concours d' Elegance.
