Naked 83 GL1100 ?

I have an lead on a Goldwing Gl1100 that I can pickup pretty cheap. I am told that it is around 1983 vintage , Runs good but has cosmetic issues with a few body panels. Not sure if its because of a drop or what.

Anyway if I decide to buy it I was wondering if these years can be converted to "naked " status without any major work. I'm talking removal of fairing, bags and trunk. I know I will have to come up with a headlight and turn signals but I am wondering about all that bodywork around the radiator. Will this leave me with a big ugly mess when the plastic is gone?

I know of several older 1000's that have done this but not so sure of the later models. I have been looking for a little more road-oriented bike to mount my old Velorex sidecar and an old wing might just work.

Not too different than the GL1000.

Google it, and you will see loads of them.

Honda made a naked gl1100 so I would think parts to convert a non-naked wing are probably available from any number of motorcycle salvage/recyclers yards. How much trouble it would be I do not know. Here is a pic of my naked 1981 GL1100 Goldwing. This is my every day around town bike....

Good luck with the conversion...the GL1100 is fabulous in naked format.

Here`s my 1981 GL1100 Plain Jane.

My 82 was originally naked, then the PO added a Vetter and hard cases. I returned it back to naked.

'83 is a good year for oldwings, the trans has a lower first gear and a higher fifth gear than the years before. All the radiator needs, with the Tupperware peeled off, is a set of side scoops from a GL1000 or naked GL1100 bolted on. Honda recommends the side scoops for better cooling, some folks don't bother. I just stripped down my '82, used aftermarket headlight and fork ears, still on the fence about what to do for turn signals.

I'm hooked on the Oldwings.
The headlight ears appear to be pretty generic from year to year.(?)
Great thing about these bikes is that parts are plentiful and relatively cheap.
I bought this one to set up another sidecar rig but enjoy riding it too much as a solo to burden it with a hack.
