First Sighting - 2014 Ford Transit Van in Denver

This afternoon I saw two UPS vans across the intersection that looked different. Thought they were some new version of their goofy looking smaller step vans but then recognized them as the new Transits...drove by slowly and sure enough they were the new Transits with the USA mouthy grille! Better looking than I expected, but they were in that olive brown whatever UPS color, had the Euro windshield/side windows that Mercedes Bend You Over copied from the Ford Euro Transit to begin with. Perhaps Ford is getting some out there for testing before starting regular production?

We get a lot of vehicles on test here in the Texas Hill Country and I saw one running around about 9 months ago. Don't know if it's the same generation or not but the larger Transits have been sold in Mexico for years - it's a popular municipal ambulance chassis.

I saw one here in Durango last week. It's grill was blacked out and it had sort of a herringbone black/white camo on the body.

Rentals

Wish Ford would put some in rental service - I'd take one from Denver to SoCal up the west coast to Wa and back home after riding Idaho and provide much feedback. Back around 1990 I test drove a VW for 3600 miles for free, sans gas, and did a lengthy report for them. I even included the off road capabilities in one comment section based on exploring the white rim trail. They never asked me again....

So Ford is stamping body parts, installing drive trains, assembling vehicles, etc....

TooFast screwed with this post 04-22-2013 at 03:47 PM Reason: Hello Ford, from an ex Sprinter Owner

I saw one last week. In camo, of course.

Advice

I don't think I can wait over a year for the Transit. I have been looking at my options for a one ton van for use in my contracting business that can fit in Honolulu's tight parking spaces with low headroom (I have used a GMC that is 6'8" for years & even that doesn't work in a lot of places);

Fiat Ducato/Ram Promaster available soon (taller & questionable front wheel drive performance but good MPG), Nissan NV available now (Nice features but long hood, taller, MPG), Mercedes Sprinter (Nice vans but expensive, maintenance issues, tall), GM Express/Savanna/3500, a friend works for a Honolulu Ford dealer & can get me X-plan pricing on a E-350.

MPG; I just ran some reports & I spent $1400 on fuel last year & $1300, $1200 in prior years. Much less than I though even with my fully loaded old guzzler. Most of my work is in Honolulu & I live in town.

Used vs new? I have never bought a new vehicle & would be taking out a loan or leasing it. Thoughts? I am going to post this in the other thread as well.

Everything about the Dodge Promaster sounds positive. I just read that they will be using the Mitsubishi Fuso 4 cylinder diesel in the van. Everyone I know of who uses or owns the Fuso swears by their reliability and performance. I've been following the van rollout rumours for some time now as I am in need of a new van soon. Ford is delayed till 2014 ( I have Fords now and they have really gone down hill )- Sprinters have problems, mostly rust and service related ( $$$$ ). This thing could be the one.
Swivel front seats. Brembo brakes. GPS navigation display. Air seats. Auto manual. Front wheel drive could be interesting.
Can't wait to test one !
