Help with buell clutch

I have a buell xb9sx. A few weeks ago the clutch locked up while I was riding home. It turns out the clutch hub needle bearing had seized and would not allow the hub and basket to spin freely. Ordered parts, took the clutch apart, and had a shop replace the bearing. I put everything back together and now the clutch drags. i.e. when I put the bike in gear even with the clutch pulled all the way in the bike still moves forward. I took the whole thing apart again to see if I could find anything. When I out the basket in the hub they spin freely. I added one plate at a time and each time tried spinning the basket in the hub. Every time I added a plate there was a little more resistance, but even with all the plates in and the pressure plate and spring resting on top I could still spin the basket by hand. There was a good amount of resistance but it would still spin smoothly. I out the bike back together, filled the primary with formula+, and still the same issue. I went for about a half hour ride to let everything get warm and circulate fluids, but there's no change. I'm kind of at a loss for what to do. Any ideas?

Have your cable adjusted for freeplay at the lever? It's a finnicky cable to get adjusted right, don't forget the adjustment it has in the middle of the cable.

This thread might help.

the sportster and the non-1125 Buells are identical in this part of the engine. Badweb is the go-to site for buells, but the search there sucks.

Check your clutch cover. They tend to break the ears off and I believe this can cause your problem.

I already checked that. With the clutch derby cover off I can see the pressure plate move in and out when I squeeze the clutch lever

Did you watch the video? There is a third adjustment on that cable.

Do you have freeplay at the lever?

Umm... Correct me if I'm wrong but in that video he only makes one adjustment.

There are not three adjustments. There are only two. One is the screw under the derby cover that sets the ramp assembly and the other adjusts the length of the cutch cable itself. I was a bit unclear when I said I adjusted the clutch at the lever. I meant to say i adjusted the clutch cable to set free play at the lever. The adjustment for the cable is actually at about the halfway point of the cable in front of the engine. There is no adjustment at the lever itself.

Sorry, it's been awhile since I've owned a Buell. So, you have freeplay and it pushes under power with the clutch pulled after a seized bearing...gonna have to dig in and inspect again I'm afraid.

Did you allow enough free play at the lever (all the way to the bars) when adjusting the ball/ramp mechanism? In order to get the right mechanism adjustment you must give the cable a lot of slack first. Then adjust the mechanism then the cable free play.

While the clutch was apart did you check the steels for warp?

Yes I loosened the cable all the way, set the ramp, then adjusted the cable. I really doubt it's the clutch adjustment. I've adjusted the clutch before and never had problems. The procedure isn't exactly rocket science either.

I looked at the friction plates and steels and didn't notice anything weird, but I can't say I checked with a straight edge or anything like that. I guess I'll have to take everything apart again and take a closer look.

I'm currently going through the same issue. Clutch started dragging, so I popped the derby cover to take a look. fluid level was high and looked like something served at Starbucks. Put her back together with fresh fluid, and she'll wheelie with the clutch lever against the bar. Needle bearing is TOAST.

Hoping the bearing is all that needs replaced, as I'm currently 500 miles from home!

fyi.. 09 XB12XT w/ 21k miles
Needle bearing apparently had a recall, but HD's records say that mine was already performed before I bought the bike new.

the fluid level in the clutch-tranny is critical.
be sure that it is not over filled and checked when level.
