Lost Coast USAL Trail KTM 990 ADV Weekend

The wife and I decided to hit Fort Bragg over Memorial Day weekend and ride some dirt and twists. Aside from the Crappy Bay Area traffic going up on 101 and coming back Monday, the weekend was fun. It was forecast to rain Monday - which it did so up north, so I decided to Hitch the KTM up and back on the jeep. First long stint having 500 LBS back on a rail, but the Jeep did very well with the rear tires at max PSI. Tounge weight cap - 750. Rail capacity 600 LBS. It all worked out.

One full day of riding - 180 miles / 60 ish dirt.

She had never been along the lost coast to Shelter cove so I decided to take her along the USAL trail. Big bike friendly, but some muddy spots for the Scorps, and we all know the Scorps hate mud - even just a little..., but I didn't want to transfer over a wheel set for 60 miles of mostly moderate dirt and 100 miles of twisty pavement. Can't wait to install the Heidenau's for my street set.

Anyway, on with the show.

I always hope for a nice clear day up north but it's hard to get in the springtime.

We left not to early but the USAL trail was pretty foggy at first, however very calm and quiet.

Reminds me of some of the dirt I did east of Seattle - rain forest like.

Sorry babe - can't see the 300 foot drop to the ocean today..

The famous wood bridge..

typical trail from South to North in the beginning - no big deal, but it gets loose and a bit rocky later.

Will the sun come out?

Took a break to hike around in the foggyness..

closed logging trail

big trees

Odd hill - goes nowhere...

We decided to ride down to Needle Rock to see if any whales were coming by

The ranger said she had been seeing 5-8 a day.

The ranger was nice - she took this with her finger.

The steps made her tired.....ha

and...............yes, that is a WHALE out there. Finally we see one. Was cool through the binoculars.

Next stop Shelter Cove for lunch.

Sun is starting to pop out

Good Fish and Chips - Good Clam Chowda..

After shelter we took the twisties back to 101 and south to Fort Bragg. I just wish 101 was as cool in the Bay Area as it is up here as it follows the Eel River.

Had to stop and hear the stories...

The sun finally came out though...

Popped back on HWY 1 and it was 100% different than the morning - clear as a bell!

No traffic up here either...We got back to Fort Bragg at 180 miles on the ODO, and no low fuel light on yet. Gotta love the ADV tank!! and I think the Remus is helping my mileage too.

So I guess I leave you with the sunset sequence - - why not eh?

Wow- where the heck was this 'sun' thing this morning?

and.... down.

That was a killer sunset ...Hope to see all you FF's on the trail this summer.

No dust... and a tacky surface. Good day for a ride on the Usal.
