Trippin' in the Yukon & the AK!

My Eskimo name is Nanuq: Polar Bear. These critters frequent our little village. photo 1975_1078289480700_6613_n.jpg

Alright, we are gearing up to do a small cruise from Sitka, up to the Yukon for a bit of a jaunt. I'm new to posting pictures, so this first post is essentially a practice.

The plan is to have Chris fly in from the east coast. He is in need of an AK adventure. He is pretty busy building 787's for Boeing. He is anxious for some RR and a midlife crisis outlet. So I am gearing our little crew up with bikes, tools, wilderness swag and all, so he has to just step off the plane and step onto the bike. I always enjoy cruising around my home state and western Canada. Some of my favorite places on earth.

The plan is to take the ferry to Juneau. We will hang out for two nights and a day then head to Skagway for a day or two-Whitehorse for a hot soak-Dawson City then loop around via Tok-Beavercreek then back to Skagway. We'll eat some good food notice any hot women along the way and swap stories about the old days when we used to live in Italy. We only have a short while before Chris must return to the east coast for work: June 15-June 22. Hopefully we'll see you on the road.

Stay tuned......

The picture is from my old village. It is my name's sake. My Inupaq name is Nanuq, given to me by my whaling captain, Ray Koonuk Sr., who passed last december.

Here are a few tempting pictures from the Yukon: Alcan road. I travel it a few times a year on my bike when I head down to America to visit family etc. Stay tuned for more picts. from our actual Yukon stomp.

This picture is from the deck of the ferry heading to Skagway. This is what we call a sucker hole-when you see a little blue in the sky, which is just a teaser because it fills up with clouds within minutes.

We hope to meet cool new people like these very super laid back Germans I met last year while guiding a trip down to America.

Ok, just for fun-can anybody tell me what this is? If you can, then you get an air high-five from Alaska. These are all over the AK.

Laugh

Although this post isn't about the trip or motorcycles- several people have asked me many questions about living an Eskimo lifestyle: whaling the arctic, hunting, Alaska etc. So I am uploading this little video for two reasons. One, I am practicing my video posting skills and two, if you have ever wondered what it is like up in the arctic on the frozen ocean near the north pole, then this is a small taste. Enjoy!

I will take a stab at the bucket thing. I would venture it is a modern rendition of a chamber pot. They used to be a lot more elegant, made of porcelain, not that I was around when they were commonly used.

That's for sure- They are more commonly known as honeybuckets. Several locations: villages, rural areas etc. do not have plumbing for sewage or running water. Many do not even have electricity. People usually chip ice from rivers for fresh water and there are honeybucket services for picking up the honeybucket bags. You are a real Alaskan if you use one. My chamber pot when I'm working in the wilderness is a bright yellow Nalgene bottle marked as poison. My co-workers tease me. But hey, I never have to leave the comfort of my tent. Which is nice on those subzero nights.

Good luck! Gotta go there!

Since we have two of our kids living in Anchorage, all of these RR's grab my interest in a hurry. It's a beautiful country and how I'd love to ride up there. The age factor is getting the best of those ideas though, so I'm watching from my old recliner! :-( Thanks for taking the time to do this for the rest of us.
