Are the lower triple clamp and locking tube the same on an 88-90 as the 91-95 GS? Max's has different part numbers (not always means their different). After replacing the steering head bearings in my 88 GS I want to know if the homemade thrust collar recommended on this site (the 3/4 copper connecting plumbing sleeve etc.) will work. Anybody done this mod to an 88-90 GS? If so, any suggestions? Thanks.

The top and bottom triple clamp, plus collars etc are different on the earlier and later bikes. I've swapped the earlier to the later type, you can pick all of the parts up s/h if you shop around a bit.

Much tighter than I'd previously set them, and helps the low-speed steering a lot. I still need to replace the bearings, though ... there's quite a noticeable flat spot. To cut the collar evenly, I used a dremel cutoff disc in my drill press, with the drill press plate 10mm belot the disc ... then just held the bottom of the collar with a pair of pliers and slid it along the plate and into the disc, turning it until it was cut all the way around. Makes a nice even cut, easy to clean up with only a little sandpaper. Wear eye protection. -----sharks |
