This is great!

Just got back on ADVrider after a long delay...I know, I know bad on me. That aside, this is one of the first RR I pull up to read and all I can say is job well done...I am inspired and my wife is worried.

Looking forward to the rest of the trip!

Day 22- Eureka to Battle Mountain ~120 miles

After our long day yesterday, we allowed ourselves a late start. NVcrash pointed us towards the old mine on Ruby Hill. It was just outside of town- so off we went.

Lots of interesting things were left behind:

A fire Hydrant?

This looked like a small hot box to torture people in

There was a great view from the mine

Time to move on. We spent a lot of time in the flat lands

Here is the Kirkster chasing some wild? horses. These horses has many miles of range to roam.

How big is the range you ask- this big

We did occasionally see some hills (between the plains)

We even rode about 200ft on the Pony Express Trail

Here we are cruising an easy packed road surface. It’s a great time to relax after miles and miles of rutted, sandy, rocky, and/or gravelly two track.

In the middle of one range we spotted this flag

Naturally, I turned it into a photo op

As we neared Battle Mountain, Kirkster spotted this huge mine tailing about ˝ mile off the trail.

In ADVRider fashion, we felt compelled to investigate. We are in the middle of a dry range and here is what we found looking down from the top of the tailing pile

To give you an idea of the size, Kirkster is in the above picture. He is all the way at the end where the road goes into the water. Here I zoomed in as far as I could from the edge

We also passed another “going north” milestone

Tomorrow we go to McDermitt

The last mine is epic. Looking at the pics I can't possibly explain why I still sit at my desk instead of exploring the world like you guys. Great RR so far!

That blue color is probably caused by a very high Copper level. Or some other type of minural that has leached out of the ground and mine tailing, collecting in that holding pond.

Around here we have what are known as Blue Holes. They were abaondoned bauxite pits. They typically have sheer cliffs and teens will jump or dive into the water. This has been going on for many many years, never heard any negative affects from swimming in a blue hole. The bauxite is used the manufacturing of aluminum.

It might be Copper.

I don't think there is any aluminum where they are.

I'm not saying the water is harmful but I've seen tailing ponds above Leadville that animals and birds avoid.

No doubt, I would have not gone for a swim either. Ours are not tailing ponds but just big holes that have filled up with water over the years.
