Laptop, where to buy?

Where is the best place to buy a laptop on line?
Price and selection. I've looked at Amazon, Tiger and newegg, of those Amazon and tiger seem to have the most of what I'm looking for.
Anyplace else I should look?
Thanks

Helmet laws suck. They interfere with natural selection.

ATGATT 35:12-14
"And Atgatt courted Motgatt, and took her for a wife.
And lo, he compromised with Atgmott, and verily she conceived,
and did bear a son, Notgatt. And Notgatt roamed naked,
and did bequeath his skin to the roads. And he was a wild ass and an outcast,
and was hated through all the land. And his forehead was branded, and he did be
come a sign and a warning to all the people."

Slickdeals sometimes has pretty good deals.

With that said, I think my next laptop is going to be a MacBook Pro.

Try dealnews: http://dealnews.com/c49/Computers/Laptops/

This site lists all the weekly deals at every brick/mortor and online seller for laptops and other stuff. I scored a smokin closeout on a Lenovo at Office Depot last year by finding it on this site.

If you're more interested in a warranty than in bells and whistles, check CDW and PCConnection. Both places are more corporate than consumer, so a lot of their gear comes with a 3/3/3 warranty. You have to check, though, because they do sell lower-end stuff that's 1/1.

Dell outlet in about 2 weeks, they blow out their refurbished stock around July 4th and you'll get amazing deals. And they have a full warranty.

Why?

I use a Windows 8 machine at a job and stock the GUI is annoying but just put classic shell on it and it's basically the same as Windows 7, just faster.

Same here. Mine uses Win 8 and it's fine.

That said, I watched/searched/hunted Amazon and got This one for $499. Not sure why I got the deal, but I can't complain.

2 years ago I bought a 17" HP laptop that had pretty high specs but is an AMD processor instead of an intel (an i5 would have had a noticeable faster processing speed, but for $100 more not worth it to me for what I use the laptop for). The thing only cost me about $420 from OVERSTOCK.com and is still as good as day 1. It looks like Direct from HP isn't much more. HP and Lenovo are all I'd buy, Dell is junk on the consumer side the business ones "Latitude" seem to be much better. The corporation that employs me is moving to HP after 10yrs of loyalty to Dell due to so many hardware failures (MoBos & HDDs) with Dells in the last 2-3 years; although I am on my 3rd (in 10yrs) and have had no issues, but I'm surrounded by those who have.

I know that at our company the policy is that we will not make the switch to Windows 8, due the fact that windows 8 was optimized for Tablet usage. We will continue to use Windows 7 until it is obsolete; we did the same thing with XP (never made the transition to Vista) and before that it was NT until going XP (no Me, or 2K). My guess is the Tablet thing is the company line, but more likely it boils down to not wanting to spend money on the upgrade if there's a distinct possibility that Windows 8 may have a short lifespan.

Do a little googling and you'll see a lot of arguments against 8.

FWIW in the next 5yrs or so you'll likely see the demise of laptops and windows based computing in the mainstream. With cloud based computing and multicore processor smart phones soon you'll just be docking your phone tablet, into a DS for any desktop work. And the OS will be very Windows OS, iOS or Android looking.

That's not just me making conjectures but straight from the mouths of engineers I've met that worked at Intel when I was living in Santa Clara in 2010. I work in the government sector and it'll be 20yrs before we move in that direction

If you want the best just get an Apple macbook pro, but it'll cost ya.

I'm not too keen on paying almost 2x for simila performance, but I'm tired of the glitchiness, software conflicts, and the constant Windows updates (which in turn create their own conflicts with other programs).

And you don't think Apple issues regular updates, some of which kill existing apps?

Search Google for HP business outlet. You get great price on business products (another acronym for reliable - typically better than consumer grade). They have specials too. I got great deals on laptops there. Good luck.

If it works anywhere near as well as my iPhone and iPad(s), I'll be more than happy.

Except when you buy an app on iTunes if it doesn't work with the new iOS they will most of the time patch it. If on the other hand you have a program that doesn't work on the new OSX if it's around the same time as a new version you might be forced to upgrade....which can cost up to thousands of dollars depending on your program. (Maya being an example of an expensive one that I dealt with being DOA after an OSX upgrade.)
