Ahoy....

Uploaded lots of pictures onto Smugmug but it took 4 hours with this measly internet connection here. So NO posting tonight, maybe tomorrow ..? Campsite internet connectivity tends to get robbed of good, fast connectivity here by hordes of Campers who also are netting about!

If one just checks their e-mail or browses the web then you are basically OK. Uploading or downloading data is usually non-de rigueur!

cheers...

There's a Tim's there in Deer Lake - it might have WiFi.

There's a hotel on the TCH right at the overpass junction with the Viking Trail - the last time we stayed there (this past New Years Eve) they had WiFi (IIRC).

Yep, plan to use Tim's this morning....also if my wife lets me sit there for 2 hours with multi coffees and croissants.

Don't use hotels much unless the weather gets way too nasty.!

cheers...

Well, you don't have to "use" the hotel in the sense you book a room there.

Go in and tell them you're documenting a big tour around Atlantic Canada and you'd like to do an entry on Deer Lake - they'll probably give you the password (IIRC their WiFi's secure) in exchange for a mention.

Newfoundland....

Hi ya'll..

Am having a mega coffee at Tim H's and firing away some pictures off to you. Hope it holds.

Getting in line for the Good ancient ship "Apollo" to take us across the Strait of Belle Isle to Newfoundland, "The Rock" .

While waiting I met these Quebec moto guys who just finished the TLH. One of the guys remembered me as the 2008 TLH transitter. We had a great conversation all things adventure motorcycling. Two of them used BMW 1200GS while one had a new Teneree.

Into the bowels of the Apollo.

This is our first roll on-roll off Ferry..

Steaming across the Strait. Two hours/give and take; at a mere $28.00(Van/2 passengers/dog).

Landed on the other side... then the long trek to a rest place!

The ever loooonnnggg NL route 430..

Free fire wood for the taking? There were hundred rows of firewood along this route. Are they free??? NF'ers chime in!

It is known that the "Rock" has about 100,000+ of these. So far according to a previous highway sign there were 4 incidents of Mr. Moose having met a mechanical vehicle; guess who won? None of the 2. Both were killed. Serious a male is as big as my VW van.

Look carefully and see the direction the trees. brushes are leaning..testament of the strong winds that are prevalent on this coast.

Stripped of its leaves...

cheers...

Newfoundland-cont.

Arrived at Rocky Harbor... found a Campground that I used once before during my motorcycle heydays. The restaurant across the street that introduced cod tongues and Black Horse(5.0) beer is no mo'. Lack of business the guy says.

The ever faithful well traveled Emma guards her home..

While taking a stroll into Rocky Harbors center...there was a overgrown rose bush that smelled incredibly... ya'll don't smell the roses like that in stores. These are natural polinated roses..so had to get one for the lady who endured so many bug bites.

While strolling through the neighborhood noticed that everyone stores their trash in these varied wooden boxes away from marauding animals.

Flora and Fauna..

Something I need to mention: Look at the Sun... orange/smoke/garish glow. It's the forest fire smoke originated from Quebec that came all the way here via NW winds. It was in Labrador and now is in Newfoundland. Totally obscured many attractions..

See the smoke obscuring the great Gros Morne area!

Had our typical Camp Food for dinner in Rocky Harbor...

Not bad... beats the fancier hot dogs/burger/marshmallows...eh?

Here Emma gets her left overs..

On to Port au Choix the next day...cloudy, overcast smoky ride..

Not much there but a great fishing town with it's fleet...that spells what? LUNCH... so some more Camp food instead of the fancier Cokes and potato chips, nuts...water... .

Spied this local watering hole...

From the local waters onto her plate..

Settled for the lesser , Halibut ..

Back on the road to Gros Morne...

cheers....

Newfoundland.... Gros Morne...

This is something we had to do..it alwys eluted us; weather; time; and now forest fire smoke...but darn it. Gotta do, gotta go! So we went against all odds. Gros Morne-Western Brook.

This is a spectacular Fijord. Glacier carved spectacle, although not too much of a snowfall occurred last tyear thus much lesser waterfalls..

Took a 3 km hike with Emma...to the boat dock thatwould take us into the abyss of the cliffs..

Believe cameras do no justice here. You got to come here and see it for yourself...

Her North Carolina hair cut doesn't cut here...

After the park visit... took homage on a wreck on shore..

Ballad of the SS Ethie...

Sorry..for the rotation, don't want to mess with it due to shaky internet here, so rotate your PC...

Found a campground in Deer Lake; the noisiest, dirtiest, loudest camp ever... not really suggested for a peaceful night.

We were David among Goliaths!

Hausfrau at work..

Aye... whew... Sat at Tim Hortons for 1.5 hrs just to entertain you...

Ahem..donations graciously accepted for multi coffees and pastries... he,he..

cheers... until the next episode!

Nice trip! I was near there last year, stayed at the Blow Me Down provincial campground west of Corner Brook, visited the Cape St George area, from Lourdes we took the gravel road to the tip of that isthmus, great views of the mountain range

Twillingate, NL...it's faces...it's splendor...

Rolled along on Trans Canada Highway on toward Twillingate.

But before heading North...we spied lobster sandwiches being sold at McDonalds.. 'McLobster".....Sharon the taster had to try one.

It's OK she says.."not bad"...

Going through Lewisporte we could see what a real winter could up here although this snowplow train is no longer being used....a museum piece now.

We were also looking for overnight camping and came upon this Park. I asked Sharon wanna stay here ...

Dildo.......

Finally Twillingate our last Northern destination before turning south..

Looking down there .. Is EUROPE....!

You guessed it...we had to stop for another Lobsta... so fresh from these crystal clear waters up North. They grow here like if they were weeds...

$4.75/lbs cooked.....not bad !?? $3.75 (live) you cook!.... the big one was a 3 pounder.

Our terrace dinning window..

This was one of the finest, most delicious.......fish chowder I ever had compared to the Esquire Rest. in Halifax, NC..! Nothing compares this soup...full of fish: Lobster bits, Haddoch, Cod, shrimps, Halibut, Turbot... NOT a shred of potato that most soups are engulfed in.

We traveled 3552 km to find this.... ohmygad this is heaven!

cheers...

Twillingate cont> Crows Head...

Wanna buy this heaven... $150k, negotiable... Summers are perfecto...winters, ah, well... -30+ F. Air here is so pure, people so gracefully nice, church and State are really separate . Lobsters, and mussels grow like weeds...

Optional..

Painted beer and whickey wind chime bottles...

Sharon made a new Newfie friend....might move here instead of, Arizona, Texas, New Mexico, Asheville..., he,he...

No need of a dryer...

By fr the best coffee/Cafe this far north. Brings StarBucks to shame...

Had to buy something for Aubry's bedroom from here. This Barista hails from Ontario; German father/Canada mother. Great couple decided to stake their lives here!

The ever romping Sharon went up that mountain.. can you see her?

In case your eyes ain't that good like mine... here's a cheat zoom for ya'.

Summer fauna...

Night Fall at Twillingsgate, NL 15 degrees centigrade..

Twillingate..cont..

Sharon here....of all the places we have travelled, Twillingate, Nfl took my breath away. Everyday we are consumed with the hustle and bustle of our lives; listen to the constant noise/eye pollution all around us; rush to some places to do the things we need or consume for ourselves; the hours rush by only to begin the hustle and bustle all over again the next day. Twillingate offered us all such candy eyed beauty that we neglect to notice, the pure and clean environment all around us, time goes by slowly and giving us all the chance to take in the beauty & stillness of time. I was so taken by its beauty, its charm and tranquility of life that I became choked up just standing there watching the sun go down....slowly. I truly feel so lucky that I have been given the life I have now, lucky that I have Elmer as my life long partner, lucky for my wonderful children, grandchildren, family, friends and pets, lucky to stand here and breath in this life of mine. If I could, I would stay here forever!
