This bike embodies the essence of the Dakar bike. Might just have something to do w/ the fact that it was the hot Dakar bike when I first became enthralled by that race:

I wonder if subconsciously I'm trying to transform my GS in to the original Dakar bike? That might just be it!

I think you mean Cagiva Mito? 125cc two stroke race rep with a 916-esque tail piece? Frecchia version had 7 gears.

Well the engine is almost the same.. the cagiva mounted the 900 cc from Ducati
and that engine is not that far frome the 1000 cc DS

The right name are Cagiva MITO and FRECCIA.. the Mito was similar to the 916, qell the fairing was actually identical, the Freccia was more similar to a 906 paso.. indeed cagiva took advantage of owning ducati for a few years..

Those Suzukis were, to my mind, THE coolest looking of all the Dakar bikes.....well, OK the early Africa Twins were great too.

The Suzukis had a very unique style with the "extra" front fender and swoopy headlight covers on some.

I've seen and been sorely tempted to buy one. You see 'em on ebay and other used bike threads around. The production bikes were very similar style wise. Dual 4 gallon tanks and a 750 cc single (GOD)...the later bikes were bored to 779 cc...Suzuki calling them an 800.

I wonder what a bike would feel like with 30 plus pounds of fuel aboard.

If you look at one of the photos with Gaston Rahier, the little guy, you'll see his name on the fairing. He was indeed 5'4....looks like a 10 year old next to that bike. Every time I think my DRZ is too tall, I think of him.

That Gilera has to be the most graceful-looking bike of this whole series, regardless of how it actually rides.

I talked to a Honda rep recently about the new Buell and he told me to put my money back in my pocket because Honda was going to release something new soon that will kick everyone's ass.
Now, I'm no sucker, but I did put my money back in my pocket and go out and buy myself an old CB900f SS just to putt around on until something comes out.
Seeing this thread is killin' me.
Go HONDA!! Seriously. Go...back to the Dakar.

It's since 1999 that we hear about Honda and a new Africa Twin.. maybe n the past would have been possible to have a bike that was an evolution of my AT, now I believe more in a less ugly version of the Varadero..

News are that the new standard is fixed by the BMW GS generation so everything will made on the base of that.. The LC8 ktm of 2006 it seems it will be less then and adventurer and more of tourer with highbars..
Would honda or yamaha do something different? I hope, but until I don't see I don't belive..
