Which Air Head???????

"The time has come"the walrus said "to talk of getting an air head GSPD"

Always wanted on, now is the time to buy/restore/rebuild/ride one.

Where do I start?

The bike will be used for day trips and maybe even weekend rides along the BRP, the Natchezz Trace, and etc.

Suggestions?

Past HS racer, road racer, LSR Holder, Buell owner, so not much we won't take on.

Regards and thanks

Get the best one you can find and can afford and then plan to put about $2K at least into it. DAMHIK: If it is in good shape.

This one looked to be in pretty good shape. It only had 38 original miles on it so it's probably all rotted out from just sitting in a climate controlled garage somewhere.

yes,buy the absolute best one you can find,or be prepared to do a little work.
In the rime i have had mine i have had to replace the trigger in the bean can, replace the diode board, get the starter bushes done and cleaned up all the carbon, replace the battery, get the battery box cleaned up and powder coated it,re cover the seat and replace the rear shock.I plan to do something about the front brake and have got a new cartridge front suspension setup.I still have intermittent dash lights and the clock and heated grips dont work, and a small oil leak from either the push rod tubes and or neutral switch. Its a 1989 and i dont really know how many KM its done. Its done at least 130,000 km maybe 230,000 km or maybe more.At one point in its life it has had a "catastrophic" drive shaft failure. It needs new rubber boots for the drive shaft and its also got a slight oil weep at the rear drive shaft boot.
I love it

We're really a bunch of nice guys and there are some airhead owners amongst us, but you really should put this query to the fellows in Olds Cool.

Surprised you didn't punt him to OldSkool sooner

Post up in the Airheads subforum at the above link, OP. You are basically going to be advised to not get your heart set on a PD model, given your day-trip operating profile. Ie: only difference between 90-95 airhead GS's is the tank capacity-- 6gal vs 9gal and some seat options is really it for those years

Head to OldSkool! :

G/S has the monolever, better off road and solo. Available only in 800cc '81-'84. Monolever is also a simpler and more rugged/dependable design.

GS has the paralever, longer wheelbase, bigger overall (not by a lot), better for big roads and two-up. Availability beginning in mid-late '80's. Read up on the horrors of the paralever and how it's the worst thing BMW ever did. (I have one)

Someone will come along and specify which years need circlip attention. I can across a '92 that had an old work order that showed circlip was done already and I'm loving the bike as my do everything bike.
