I belive they're ruinously expensive. That's why so few teams competed for this America's Cup.

Let them sail stock Hobie Cat 16's. Then you would have a lot of competition.

The America's Cup has always been about uber rich groups battling it out for an ugly cup. Let them spend their billions. I'd bet the tech trickles down to boats that cost half what one of those cats cost.

read somewhere Oracle is spending over $100 million on their two boat program. They were not challenged by any other US team. And presently are getting their asses handed to them

Team NZ has always been partially funded by the taxpayers.
It would be a brave politician that tried to take away funding from such a feel good story.

It's all about tourism dollars. I think New Zealand rather liked hosting the America's Cup way back when.

True, it was great party while it lasted - but it's also due to the fact that boat ownership in this island country is off the scale and Yachting is a big sport.

Technically, should that the "islands country"?

Interesting point.
It consists of more than one island, but where ever you are in it you are on an island.

Shit - it's doing my head in now...

Here we go: Collins English Dictionary Definition

Quote:
island nation -noun
a country that is entirely made up of one or more islands
Phew.

The US has changed tacticians after it blew a lead in Race 5.

I don't know anything about sailing. But it looked like the US tried to combine two maneuvers in one when rounding a buoy. The boat almost came to a dead stop and they also lost the most favorable course position. The Kiwis made a normal turn and tack, maintained their boat speed and eventually built an insurmountable lead.

Here's a super basic explanation of how they work.

I'd love to go for a ride on one!
