Not sure it will work in the tank on the bike that I haven't even picked out yet :-) I have 3 chassis in mind right now.

KTM XC or RFS
DRZ/KLX400 (I like the idea of keeping it Kawasaki)
WR250R

Here is a "close enough" measurement of as much as I could get with the body in place. It might give you an estimate of what you are up against.

Width of the head, between 10-11"

TB outside to outside, including what I believe is the TPS, 7.25"

Overall height, top of head to bottom of pan, 21-22"

Overall length from tip of cylinder head to back of gearbox, 16"

Overall length from tip of oil filter to back of gearbox, 14"

Outside-outside of widest point of engine, 15", clutch cover to ignition cover. Both are offset, left front wider, right rear wider but 15" max.

Don't go chopping frame rails based on those measurements. I took them as best as I could get, lots of stuff in my way. The rear doesn't pass the swing arm pivot bolt thru the engine, that might make everything easier to line up.

Awesome! Thank you. Def gives a good starting point. My engine should be picked up today. Hoping I get it by the end of the week.

Does anyone need a perfectly good running DRZ400 motor? Jetted carburetor? Header? Coil? Ignition module?

Engine came today!

Stripped and weighed...

That's 91.8 lbs. I checked it with a second scale that said 92. Initial (inconclusive) research shows that the DRZ engine weighs 84 lbs. I don't know what state that is in. I'm going to look some more. http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/803...g-a-drz-motor/

The wiring harness, the throttle bodies, and all of the magic boxes including the regulator weighed 9.2 lbs.

And just for reference the Ninja 300 frame stripped of everything but the kick stand weighed 36 lbs.

Just for comparisons sake. I had my EXC530 engine shipped in a cooler, no carb, no shifter or kicker, dry after a rebuild. The whole thing, packed in a cooler was 92 lbs. This has to be within 7-10 lbs. of that engine considering the extra parts and the cooler/packing materials.

Not a bad starting point!

Wow! you got more than just the engine... What a great package, may I ask how much you had to pay for that? If I remember correctly you got it on eBay right??

This is gonna be a great build, I can't wait to see it happen!

Oh yeah, it's a plug and play engine. I wanted the Ninja frame in case the KLX frame is too far off. If I have to I can graft the two together.

$800 for everything shipped.

Ninja gauge cluster came today. I pick up the KLX tomorrow night. Then the fun begins!

** If anyone is thinking about trying this project send me a PM. The guy I got the gauge from has an engine for sale. He's in Cali. I think he could possibly be an idiot so I'm not going to vouch for him but I can say he is real. I paid him, he sent my stuff.

Smokin' deal!

I'm assuming you got this through an individual sale, not through an eBay junkyard. Those guys are awful for this kind of project. If they could figure out how to sell each thread on a bolt separately, they would.

In for the build.

Ain't that the truth.

I've found Copart a great place to buy bikes like this. That's where I got the Ninja 650. It helps to bid on bikes in states where you don't need a dealer license. I paid $560 for mine OTD and it was a complete bike. Minus the front end laying on a pallet

There is a 2013 ninja 300 for sale in Pittsburgh Copart sale on 8/27 it appears. If anyone is interested, I'm local and have purchased form there before if you want a ADV inspection. With 252 miles on it I can only imagine...
