A Couple More Passes

I was tempted to camp along this river on the US 395, but wanted to bag a couple more passes.

It was really windy on Monitor Pass.

The climb up Ebbetts Pass had a real narrow road.

An RV coming the other direction left me very little space to pass, but the real hazard was a crazy woman in a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I was rounding a tight turn when I saw the oncoming Jeep. I dove for the edge of the road and braked almost to a complete stop.
I could see the look of terror on the woman's face as she rounded the corner at about 40 mph. She was driving directly down the center.
She never altered her course or slowed at all as she came within inches of slamming into me.

There was lush alpine vegetation near the top of Ebbetts Pass and it was cold.

The gas station in Bear Valley closes at 5. I really hope there will be gas in Arnold. If not...

I found a little spur just off the highway. Free camping is the best.

It was another dark and clear night. I slept like a rock.

Day 3 Map

I missed a turn from Trimmer Springs Road and has some fun on other roads. I actually found my way back onto the route, but then turned onto Highway 168 when I should have gone straight. I kept riding and looking for my turnoff, but it never came. I was almost to Clovis before realizing how far out of the way I was.

You have an 02 Aprilla Futura with 54K on it, and you wonder if you can get a few more long trips out of it? That bike is good for 100K and many more trips, so keep on a ridin it.

Thank you for the wonderful videos and pics!

Day 4

I was up early and feeling rested.

April got a refill in Arnold...

We rode down the hill and turned north on the 49.

The best fun all day was on Mokelumne Hill RD to Westpoint. Google Maps names it Stephen P. Teale Hwy. Twisty Fun!

I usually ride around with the trip odometer displayed and the regular odometer hidden. For some reason
I started thinking about when April reached the milestone of 50,000 miles and how I haven't ridden her
much since. I started wondering what the next milestone would be. I switched back to the odometer and
saw a major milestone was within 10 miles...

We stopped here to celebrate...

April @ 55,555!

Carson Pass Highway was scenic, but after Sonora Pass these roads were no longer fun.

I stopped in Kirkwood. The last time I saw these slopes I was riding the snowboard in 6 feet of fresh powder.

Caples Lake

I changed my plans up some and decided to route along Lake Tahoe, though I knew I would regret it.

I didn't bother stopping at the crowded Emerald Bay overlook.

Lake Tahoe is beautiful...

but crowded. The slow traffic and construction delays required patience.

Finally, I made it to the 89 north of Truckee.

I had to make more adjustments to the chain. It has me a little worried, but I decided to continue on.
I know most any dealer would have a chain, but I would never find new sprockets. It's hard to ride with crossed fingers.

I was bored, tired and hot...

as I followed other vehicles on the Feather River Highway.

I decided to find a room in Chico.

I had rewards cards so this $90 room at the Chico Best Western cost me nothing.

Theoretically yes. I don't worry about the engine, but there could reach a point where the price of parts could make some repairs not worth it. Epoxy and zip ties are already holding together some of the plastics and fairing. I intend to keep her running as long as I can, and will probably never sell her. Thanks for coming along!

Some brilliant photo's. No that's not right. They're ALL brilliant photo's. As I enjoy photography and come to the PNW in October for a 3 week ride which will include some of these roads, I'd love to know what sort of camera set up you use

Great RR by the way.

Cheers,

Geoff

Thanks, Geoff!

I am using a Pentax K-5 dslr and four lenses. The most used lens is the DA*16-50 f2.8. The second camera is an Olympus PEN EPL-1 with a 17mm pancake lens. The helmet camera is a Drift HD. I spend a lot of time post-processing, which has more to do with the appearance than the camera used. All of the photos are done in Lightroom 5. Most black and whites are done in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 and most HDRs are done in Photomatix Pro 4.2. The panoramas are stitched in the freeware Microsoft ICE. For fonts and additional fun effects I use the online editor PicMonkey. The videos are thrown together in Windows Live Movie Maker.

Holy snappin' duckshit Batman!! No wonder they're professional quality!! I'd love to bring my SLR and lenses but just won't have the room or weight availability for the flights. Might have to cut and paste some of yours into my trip!!

Fantastic effort. Looking forward to more

Cheers,

Geoff

Day 5

Leaving Chico I stopped for a look at what makes these hills gold.

Not far from town the gold gives way to lush green.

The ride through Deer Creek Canyon was an unexpected highlight of the trip.

It was the first time I've ridden this road.

California truckers must have huge gonads given the speeds they can move...

on such twisty roads.

This is something I don't see in Arizona.

Before long, Lassen Peak was peeking through the trees.

Lassen is reason enough to visit this part of California.

It was a little chilly and overcast this morning.

This is Lake Helen. I've taken my wife Helen here before.

Fun roads and not many people here.

I got this creepy feeling someone is watching me.

Great stuff , love your lens work. As a guy that's had the fortune to ride many of these areas on two wheels, and 4wd I think you've got a terrific pony for the task. I also concur with the thrill of HWY 36 between Red Bluff and !01. Make sure you stop in the lil town of Platina for a beer, burger, gas, and, if you're lucky, some local chit chat. Another terrific road in situations where you want to avoid the heat of Death Valley is HWY 168 out of Big Pine , this becomes 266 as you cross into Nevada. It ends on 95 and there's not much between there and Vegas. But that stretch between Big Pine and Tokop ( Lida Pass) is terrific, no traffic, no services. Well I'm on board to see the rest of your trip. You're heading into roads I don't ride much. Thank you for taking the time to post up,

I agree on 36, but I always give up half of it because the lure of hwy 3 through Hayfork is so strong.

Good stuff, Dave!! I saw you in Eatpasta/AJ's report awhile back, hey that's Dave and April I said!!
