Just head north from San Francisco

Day 1 Mountain View CA to Tomales CA

Last year the plan was that Mrs Lakota and I would rent a motorcycle in San Francisco and ride north up the left coast to around Astoria and then loop inland to head back south, taking about a week. For some reason or another we never made the reservation for the moto. After my crash on the Continental Divide ride

I was not allowed to ride for two months. So no reservations was a lucky play.
Fast forward to this year. Do the research again and make reservations with California Motorcycle Adventures http://www.californiamotorcycleadventures.com/ for a K1600GT. It was a good choice as far as I can see. Ilene, Nathaniel, and everyone there were very helpful and got us on our way with a minimum of hassle.
But I jumped too far. First we had to get to SFO. Make reservations using USAIR frequent flier miles for first class seats. Arrival will be at 1040, allowing us plenty of time to get to the rental shop, load the bike, do the paperwork, and get moving before PM rush hour clogs the roads and the Golden Gate Bridge. Problem was USAIR had other plans. The connecting flight to Philly was cancelled at 0130 and we were rebooked through Charlotte, not in first class and getting there at noon. Cushion gone and no recourse. Bitched about the first class seats and got that fixed. In the end we get to SFO at 1240 and to the rental shop, using their shuttle, about 1:30

Donna getting ready

After a lap around the parking lot to show them I could ride we are off into the weekend rush. The intent was to ride 90 miles and call it a day. The ride took 3 ½ hours. Roads were clogged and slowed to a real crawl at the Golden Gate. We left 101 at Mill Valley, the plan, and tok Highway 1 over the mountain to the coast to Stinson Beach. Butler Maps has high praise for this route too.
Then it was up the coast to Tomales for the overnight. While there are lots of cars on the highway, they seemed to be very polite and got out of my way whenever there was a turnout for them to use. Fog ruled the weather so there was no point in trying to get pictures. The other thing was that it was cool, temps in the low 60s, after the high heat and humidity in Maryland
A lot of our friends don't believe Donna rides with me so here she is on the bike

Our first stop the Continental Inn http://www.thecontinentalinn.com/

A shout out to the Darth Peach - wish I could take pix of flowers like she does.

Today’s ride 90 miles
Tomorrow heading north on Highway 1

Funny, I never drove on Highway 1 tip to tail when I lived there. Now I can't wait to go back and do it Tourist!

Day 2 July 27 2013 Tomales CA to Eureka CA
The word of the day is FOG. And temperature swing.
But first a few more pictures from Tomales
A picture of a picture of the hotel when it was first built. Not much change on the exterior

The hub of Tomales, the bakery deli complex

Lots of interest here. Sports bikes going from somewhere to somewhere else stopping in for a fat pill and a coffee. Locals sitting on benches discussing everything from the state of local/regional theater to good old Mr Weiner flashing his Johnson in New York. A nice place to sit and eavesdrop.
The building across the street. Where does anyone use the word mercantile anymore?

Its misty and damp as we get underway from Tomales. Highway 1 takes us back to the coast and we get to see the ocean. Glad I took these pictures as we don’t see it for a long time.

The visibility drops to less than one hundred yards.
There really is ocean down there

I took this for two reasons

1. I followed this guy for almost an hour in dismal sight conditions. What would have been a marvelous ride if one could see the road was mainly survival in the wet conditions
2. The state of California had at least 5 of these along this stretch of Highway 1 repairing bridges which, as we could see, really needed it
The fog lifted eventually and we stopped to see the lighthouse at Pt Arena. Cost $7.50 to get close and I didn’t see any cost advantage to doing so.
The lighthouse

The bike

The ocean

Donna

wonder which direction the prevailing wind is

How about these cypress trees?

It got to be lunch time as we arrived in Ft Bragg (CA not NC)

Lunch porn
Lentil Soup (outstanding)

Sliced turkey with cranberry

Burger on sourdough

Gas in California

We got back on the road to ride Highway 1 to Leggett. According to Butler in the Northern CA motorcycle map Ft Bragg to Leggett is “possibly the finest section of the world famous coastal Highway 1, the journey is highlighted by crumbling cliffs and dark blue ocean on either side.”. He is not lying. The last 22 miles are a motorcyclist’s dream. Curves and switchbacks galore. A pleasure to ride! Arriving in Leggett marks the end of Highway 1 and puts you on Rte 101. Here is the temperature change. It was 56F in Ft Bragg and 88 when I stop for gas

We take 101 North (the temperature is now 98)and get off at the first exit for Avenue of the Giants in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. A nice road but too many tourists. However the tree cover causes the temp to drop to 81

We stay on it for about 30 miles and then jump back on 101 for the last 35 miles into Eureka (temp 62). That’s a +42 and then -36 degree swing in 3 ½ hours.
Yeah I know it’s a Best Western

The clerk said park here even without me asking

Nice room though

Dinner stop

More food porn
Pea soup and salad

Barbeque special

It’s Marie Callendar’s for cripes sake – you gotta have pie
Double cheese blueberry

Two thoughts
I saw more long haul bicyclists today than on any single day ever. Gotta have a lot of respect for them.
I was impressed with the politeness of the drivers today. They always seemed to move over to let me by when I wanted to pass. However, there were almost as many RVs as I saw on the Alaska Highway. They are not fun to get stuck behind.

today's ride 250 miles
