Question What To Do

I bought an 85 RM250 thats been sitting 10-15yrs, Would it be ok to try to start it or what should I do first ? The top half was rebuilt before it was stored in a garage. Look's like it just came off the showroom floor, only gave $450 for it. Replys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Start with the basics:

Change all fluids.
Fresh fuel.
New spark plug.
Grease everything.
Check that all cables work freely.

Kick that puppy over and see if she'll start.

New tires/tubes should be next.

Do this. Only thing I'd do different is kick it over real gentle first to make sure nothing seized

Probably needs a new cable.

Check the air filter, they have a way of dissolving and getting sucked into the carb, don't ask how I know.

How do you know it won't engage? It was probably engaged all the time it was sitting.

I assumed he meant disengage. It's probably engaging , but without a chain.

Replace the air filter, it WILL be rotten. Drain and replace all gas and oil. Put in a new spark plug, and then try to start it.

Most likely the crank seals will need to be replaced. Electrical connections could be corroded. There could be rust on the flywheel and corrosion where the stator plate bolts to the motor.

It shouldn't be to hard to get it running. But you will most likely need to replace ALL gaskets and seals in the motor.

If you get it running, ride it for a bit with the clutch lever pulled in. Blip the throttle and the clutch plates should free up.

The most obvious thing that it WILL need is the carburetor cleaned.
