Thanks - always great when someone 2+ thousand miles away lends their opinion!

Did I mention this thread is a disaster?

ANY pre-IOV thread invariably becomes a disaster!

I've spoken with numerous VME guys, on several occasions over the years...never quite motivated me enough to join...yet.

Maybe now that a few in my stable are 30+ years old, they might be more...accommodating. Maybe not.

if the vme want their little gathering all to themselves, let them have it. all I got from the one year I attended was a broken mirror and a ride with a bunch of drunk assholes, neither courtesy of vme members. I'll never go back.

My response was based on what I read and the tone of how it read. As a complete outsider with no knowledge of the people or the event, I only wrote what my impressions were. I was curious about what sounded like an interesting event. Even if I lived in the area, I would still interpret things the same way.
I realize because I do live so far away, that my opinion maybe doesn't matter all that much. But I really got the impression that new people really weren't all that welcome. For many years the C.V.M.G.( particularly in Ontario), had a similar attitude towards newcomers. It was kind of an old boys club, and if you didn't share their interests and ideals, you were not welcome.
Thankfully, things have changed somewhat, and new people are very much encouraged to join. It's the only way a club or event can survive.
You certainly want to keep out people that are going cause issues that might prevent holding it in the future. I have organized and planned several events similar to this, so I know what's required, and what the results can be. But I also know without people showing up, the event can't continue on as long as you might want.
I hope it all works successfully for you.

I've heard of it over the years and was always interested, but now, like you McJamie, I don't THINK so. It's several hours away from me (which isn't all that far) but like you, if I was closer I still wouldn't go. I've got better things to do.

Just don't want it to become another Oyster Run.

It's about old bikes, not chromed-out harleys or the latest racer replicas.

From what I'm seeing here - if I'm not part of the club I wouldn't be welcome. Besides that, only the members are supposed to know the date, so again I feel excluded. I'm not much for big clubs and large group rides so I'm not even sure this is something I'd be interested in.

Tell us what it's like. What do you enjoy about it? What is the event all about?

exactly, thats why i don't go to the oyster run. (once was enough. try to ride through drunk pirates in formation, its like a 100 yard long Winnebago. plus they get a little nervous when ya have to pull in with them..)
Vashon?? a fun day,i try to go every year..

Funny... If you go on the website: the few pics show mostly modern bikes... I passed by this island a month ago: tourists trap with uber expensive not great restaurants (but a lot of holistic massage places!).

If you join the club, you get to see the old bikes.

Actually this is an extremely cool event. 1000's of bikes of all makes and years, some I've never heard of. Very few Harleys lots of Europeans.
I'm not a member, but have gone every year for the last decade. I have always felt welcome. Riding the ferry to and from the island with hundreds of bikes aboard is a real thrill in itself. I'm going if I can find out when it is. Usual I get an invite from a member around now.
Somebody tell me when it is, I'll keep a secret.

I have been many times- it is a cool event- I think the reason they don't publish the date is to try to limit the numbers of bikes- not some grudge against anyone- it is a small island, serviced only by ferry, and has a lot of wealthy locals who really get twisted by having their precious little island invaded by a bunch of bikers who take up the ferry spaces, occupy downtown, etc. So it is a delicate balance to keep the thing going, and they try as far as possible to avoid offending the locals. I suspect they also feel that the date will get spread enough by WOM among the vintage crowd, and that may serve to help keep the event from being over-run by straight pipe Harley's etc.

The above are just my feelings about it, I am not a VME member.

Yes...but if you talk to the local businesses on the island they'll tell you it's the greatest thing to hit the island all year.
I'm whispering so nobody can hear....is it really next weekend?
