Maybe I can do both?
The Mexican law differs from state to state. I used to go in there quite a lot scuba diving in the San Carlos area, but have stopped in the late 90's as we encountered more federal police intimidation that we cared for, then came the killings, and the party was over for us. But Sonora is perhaps the friendliest for tourists, and at least back then it was easy to bring in your vehicle. Best thing would be to check each individual MX state. As far as the route, one option would be to go down Sonora, and south, Mazatlan...etc, and then catch a ferry across the sea of Cortez, to the baha, and ride up north. Regardless, you have a bunk here on the border, if you need it. I would ride with you in part of NM,AZ, or perhaps come up and meet in Colorado, and float a few 4km'ers. Just a thought.

nice

nice story - and a great ride !

but, you have to give Grand Canyon a 2nd chance - here's what you do:

book 2 nights at the Travelodge in Williams (?) just 60 miles south ... then 'do the Canyon' in one full day ... back home 1hr for the night and then move on.

yes the Lodge is outrageous but just one google will tell you that .... otherwise not bad .... and we had bad weather on the way out ... seems to me the bad weather soured your experience, that's too bad.

lots to see in AZ, UT, and NV eh ?

Now there's yer problem! When you're cold and wet and there's no WiFi for miles around you just have to find out for yourself!

We had planned on doing the North, then the South, then leaving the area for the night. So yeah, bad weather soured things but that's life and expected while riding. I hated feeling trapped in all the overpriced crap of the monopoly they've created. Felt like corruption. Had we been in a car it would have been......better?

"They" say the North Rim has better views so having seen it in patches we figured Moab would be the best bet. I much prefer sights like Monument Valley over the big hole. Moab had dozens of hotels and most were full. Busy place..

But yes, some great States there for scenery and activities. Love it.

OK so just a little update on my coolant leak. Turns out it was just a hidden rock dent in the lower tube that developed a pinhole. All that rain we were in washed away the evidence to make the leak appear to be the head gasket. I had it repaired/tested at a Rad shop and all is well again. A hazard for any bike with a rad. So the trusty GS's made the trip faithfully. All that stress for a $75 rad repair.
