Even after I've reduced it to about 400 pixels across, the file is still at about 280kb....

Making it smaller than 400 pixels across really makes the picture look too small for posting (regardless of how many kb it is)....
Maybe it is something to do with the 72 pixels per inch thing

hey fistee,

what flavor of photoshop are you using?

The easiest trick is, rather than using "save-as", to use "save for web". There you can play with the jpeg compression and see how large the file is in a much simpler and more dynamic way. Additionally, you can also adjust the size of the final image in this step (though I usually do it ahead of time).

It will give you a fairly accurate information about the final file size.

FWIW, i'm a web design geek and live in "save for web" (shift-command-option-S on a mac).

Decrease the resolution to 80dpi or so. I'd guess that you've maintained the high resolution. Given that web images don't get displayed much about 72dpi (?), it doesn't make a bit of difference if your resolution is 300dpi.

Fistee,
good for you! (no kidding)

I'm running the same. Save for web will be your savior for this purpose. Resolution is automatically set to 72 dpi, effects of compression are seen immediately, etc.

Fist,

I am also on OS X and PS 7. Here is what I do and it works well.

Go to Image>Image Size.
Once there set the document resolution to 72 dpi and set the document size accordingly. Typically you will want to keep the longest size less that 7-8 inches so it can be viewed easily when posted. I have a screenshot attached below that shows the setting I use. This first step sets the size of your image.

Then I go to "Save for Web".
I use the 4-UP window. For photos choose jpeg, I use a quality setting of 65-70, try changing that setting and it will show file size in the window with the image you have selected, once you are under 160kb hit save and you are ready to attach the file. You should be able to get well under 160kb to save on bandwidth for those on dial up.

A photo service such as smugmug.com allows you to post your original files there and link to them via the IMG button. That keeps you from resizing, people can access a larger file if they want to and it allows you to post more than one image in a single post.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

the downside of the small market share is that you can't get help from a massive herd of sheep...

That would be photohop that is more complex. You could always use iPhoto and export for web/email which does it for you, but the Photoshop method will allow you to control the size and compression much better, but it is more work.

Thumb sweet

Thanks everyone....The Fist is now well-versed in the posting of pictures....I still havent sprung for a smug-mug acct. but maybe will in the near future...

The save for web function on PS worked very well....You can see its success under Illinois Riding threads....

Thanks again,
and yes, Macs are easy to use (but you could sure-as-shit quit your day job to make time to master photoshop)

I have some customers that think that way until they have a multimillion page litigation database need.

Then they go buy a couple PCs so they can get some actual work done.

heh

I'll come clean -

I think ALL computers suck in their own special way. And, conversely, have their plus side.

we really don't want to dive into the Mac vs. Windoze BS do we?

I'm guessing those mac using clients needed to use some bit of software that was windows specific (a sad reality).
