The Kindness and Generosity of Strangers

In the mid nineties, the idea first seeded in my brain. A friend was telling me how he and a group of riders had ridden North-to-South, down the length of Utah, off road, camping along the way.

Why not Canada to Mexico off road?

Many years later, after marriage, more school, the birth of my daughter, more training, a marriage falling apart, divorce, etc., I thought, now is the time.

While healing from this,

I committed myself to the trip by purchasing a round-trip plane ticket. The master plan was to slab the Super Enduro as close to Canada as I could get, change tires and oil, fly home, work a couple more weeks, then fly back and ride the Great Divide Mountain Bike Trail. 2500 miles off road, from the Canadian to the Mexican border.

Locked and loaded:

I left Lubbuttock, TX late one Friday morning, needing to make a stop in Fort Worth. The following day, I rode fort-to-fort, Worth to Collins. 14 hours, 2 major rainstorms, innumerable traffic jams on I-25, and 810 miles.

Over the next few days, I rode through a slalom course of pirate ships headed to Sturgis, camping along the way:

And meeting up with some inmates for tent space (REALGRAVEROBBER):

Eventually arriving in Worley, ID where I met the Gunns, a family of adventure riders:

Missoula:

A good day of riding often means a bad day for bugs:

Sleeping on Lake Coeur d'Alene:

Total mileage:

Then the adventure began:

Looks like the planned oil change turned into some more serious. This should be interesting. That's an interesting looking garage, too. What's the other bike hiding behind the orange beast! Oh, and that x-ray made me wince. Did you do that riding? Looking forward to the rest of this journey!

Can't wait for the complete story.

I've been involved four different times taking a engine out of a 950 so...I can't believe you did it on the road.

The motor was out of the bike in 3 hours, the cases were split 2 hours later, but I will let Hick tell the story.

So a bit about your humble narrator.

This is me:

This is what my patients think of me:

This is the virtual me:

Ryman ( puppy porno ) and I had talked about doing this trip together, and incorporating the Tour of Idaho, and other mixed single/double track, and doing it on little bikes - like the 500 and 690.

Unfortunately, Ryman tried blow up Vernal, Utah with propane, and I think he was running from the ATF or something, but had to cancel both our Baja trip and our Canada-Mexico ride.

I was sitting in the mire of self pity one day: going through a divorce, my daughter is 1200 miles away, I am rehabbing a second broken collar bone in 6 months' time as well as a broken wrist, and my "oh-so-hot" girlfriend had just left me because clearly I am way too awesome for her.

"F*ck it," I thought. I'm doing this ride solo!

I have done solo rides before, and the ONLY reason they have been any sort of success, is because I was willing to ask strangers for help when needed.

I have been through some pretty rough times in my life; mostly self-imposed. Regardless, I wake every morning excited for the day ahead. I also CHOOSE to think the best of people. I am not a rainbows and unicorns and puppies kinda blind optimist; I know there are evil people out there (it is scientifically proven that some bitches just be trippin').

I just choose to give people the opportunity to show their good side...and I carry a subcompact 9mm for times when they don't.

This trip was an affirmation of my optimism and the kindness and generosity of strangers.

The other bike(s) are a KTM 300 XC, and a KTM 500 XCW.

The broken collar bone was: first from mountain biking, and second, bitch-slapping the Earth on my 500. I hit so hard it knocked buttons off my jacket!

I like to consider myself an "evil scientist", but the American Board of Pediatrics prefers I call myself a Neonatologist...myopic bastards!
