If you are alive after the encounter with the deer, then you are lucky.

Too bad you don't realize that, and instead are slamming people who do.

Back in '39, ole Uncle Billy had that exact same scenario happen, and he laid 'er down, and saved the day.

Out of curiosity... What were you riding? Did you see the deer? Did the deer hit you/or did you hit the deer?

If you hit the deer, were you swerving (trying to avoid impact) when you made contact? Or were you upright and braking?

Was riding my new R1200GSW with about 500 miles on the clock :(
It ran out and hit me on the right hand side.
I don't mean to be a whiny little bitch, but after the 54th time of being told how lucky I was, it could have been worse, you kinda get sick of it. The accident was painful, and bad enough.
Anyway, on the road to recovery, and I will ride again. Cheers dudes.

I've had a couple of exciting and painful mishaps and it used to annoy me to no end when people told me that I was lucky it was not worse. My reply is that lucky would mean no mishap at all, I was just not as unlucky as I could have been - but I was still unlucky to have been involved in the mishap.

If luck had nothing to do with it...

How come you hit a deer?

Crash,
the deer ran right out of a forest into me (on the RHS) I didn't have a chance to see it as the brush to my right was concealing it completely. By the time I saw it, it was too late. no time to brake or swerve. Kinda like a guided missile. Speed at the time was 32.8 mph. Some could argue that I should have been looking out for it, should have been paying attention, etc, etc. Believe me, I have questioned these same things a million times myself, and I have come to the conclusion that there was honestly nothing I could have done differently. I mean what do you do when an animal makes a beeline from the 3'o clock position and runs into you? In retrospect, I wish I would have not made this post here, about people telling me I was "lucky" because I realize I sound like a whiny puss now. Most folks are simply wishing me well, and yes, I was lucky that it wasn't any worse. It just gets old, when you're all banged up, hurting like hell and another person says "well you're lucky it wasn't worse" as if you were doing something stupid and irresponsible to begin with - like riding a bike. It's the old "I told you so" sense, especially coming from those who have never ridden. Anyway, I'm over it. If you have any suggestions on how the hell I can avoid this from happening again, let me know. I obviously want to learn from my mistakes.
Love your videos by the way, your blog is great as well.

Cheers.

Shit happens. People love you. You weren't more greviously damaged.

Life is good.

Thanks by the way.

You laugh, but when I lived in LA I almost hit one on Mulholland Drive right around Laurel Canyon. He was just chilling in the middle of the road and didn't GTFO until I hit the horn. Mule deer, not very big, but still would have hurt.

It sounds like code for... "you got away with it this time, next time you won't be lucky, you better give up the bike".

It is lack of empathy, mostly unwittingly.
Staying in 'small talk mode', where the objective is to reply with an even tougher tale.
Dead giveaway is when they start talking before you finished.

It is a fine test though to find out who is awake and with you.

Heal well, the road beckons.
