Brooklyn to the Yukon

Fellow Inmates,

On June 5th I'm departing for a 4,200 mile cross-Canada motorcycle trip with two good friends, starting in Toronto (my trip starts in Brooklyn) and ending at Dawson City in the Yukon. If the weather permits, we're going to take a shot at the Dempster Highway, up to the arctic circle.

I'll do my best to update this RR along the way. Chances are, once we get on the road, most of my posts will be short and to the point, leaning on photos to tell the story. I hope it turns into a nice record of the trip, and a way for my family and friends follow along. I won't have cell data, so I'm depending on wifi.

This is a trip we've been planning, on-and-off, for over 3 years. We're going to take our time, enjoy some camping, meet some people, and finally see this giant country of ours.

Special thanks to Super Tenere (Jeff), who made an epic journey last year, and wrote all about it in his RR "Ottawa-Inuvik-Tierra Del Fuego". Your advice has been very helpful, and encouraging.

Will we make it? There's only one way to find out!

Lee

Thanks ShinySideUp!
The bike is all washed and ready to go. I leave on Thursday on my way up to Canada, to meet my two friends in Toronto.

I plan on riding up through Hancock NY then over to Ithaca to camp for a night. The Finger Lakes region is really nice so I don't want to rush through. Then to Hamilton to say hello to my aunt and uncle. By Saturday I should be in Toronto.

Two days before departure... Things are really busy at work and at home. I'm at the point where I want to put all the planning and preparation behind me, and just get out of NYC!

I took a few shots of my tool kit and cooking setup. My goal was "comfortable minimalist".

I'm bringing a tire patch kit, air compressor, chain lube, duct tape, electrical tape and all the tools I need to disassemble the "top layer" of the bike. I have an emergency chain saw (mostly for cutting stick wood -- we'll see how this holds up), two tire pressure gauges, some zip ties and a Sharpie marker (because you always need one). I'm on a BMW, so I picked up all the hex tools I need. My friends are on VStroms and are bringing any Allen keys they need.

That all packs into a small tool bag I picked up.

For cooking I have a simple pot, burner, a head lamp, lighter, storm matches, knife/fork/spoon, Chinese spoon, Leatherman multitool, spare batteries, flashlight, cup/bowl and a cigar cutter for good measure.

That all packs down into the pot and an old coffee can that I modified with duct tape and stickers. Add to that a Nalgene bottle for water and measuring, and another aluminum water bottle.

I'll do another post soon with some of the other little things I'm bringing.

Day 1:

I'm just waiting for some rain to pass over the NY area. I don't mind getting wet, but I'm not in any hurry to fight NY/NJ traffic in the rain.

In the meantime... Here's another bit of gear, what I call my "office" kit.

I have a small radio for listening to the weather or news, a bag full of maps (I'm using the Tom Tom app on my iPhone because it doesn't require data service, but I have paper maps just in case). I'm bringing a Kindle, passport, wallet, my old iPod that doubles as an external hard drive for backing up Go Pro video. Some earphones, Loonies and a little case to hold my hearing protection.

Here I have the things that are accessible to me while Im riding. I have a small map bag that attached to my handlebar. Inside I keep my fuel log, a pen, extra hearing protection and a spare key. Extra micro USB cards, an E-ZPass for NY/NJ tolls, power chord for my iPhone or whatever needs to be charged (it connects to a SAE-USB plug wired to my battery). The little black stick is a backup power source, it can charge my phone twice (or the GoPro, Kindle, iPod). Top right is a RAM mount to hold my iPhone.

Thank Mosey, I'll do my best to represent BK. Riding in NYC teaches you to be resilient, that's for sure!

Day 1, part 2: The time has come to hit the road. I've only had butterflies like this twice before I'm my life: on my first day of school and on my wedding day! Here we go!

Night 1: I left Brooklyn around 1pm and made it to Robert H. Treman state park, near Ithaca, around 6:30pm. Luxury!
