To make it shorter you have two options:

Your bike is one of the tallest, you can swap with any Adventure from 2005.5 and later to get about a 1 1/2" shorter bike. Easy swap, must include the center and side stands. Takes about 2 hours. Advertise on the forum and you should find someone.

Your bike probably needs the suspension rebuilt, fresh oil, new fork seals and all the debris cleaned out. You would like stiffer fork springs too, as the stockers are soft. To shorten the bike, it's only a little more labor to install spacers, get a shorter rear spring and cut the side stand. Most suspension shops have done this.

Does he have the tall suspension?

Mine does, but it is the earliest of the '04s, the silver one. I thought the later '04s had the lower suspension.

All non-s 2003 and 2004s have 230mm suspension. In 2005 they shortened it to 210mm.

The first thing you should do is make sure the rear and front has minimum preload.

The difference between high and low at the rear is 30mm.

Preload only effects ride height, and not stiffness or hardness.

Low Riding

As others have mentioned, your 2004 std is taller than later models standard height, at 230mm of stroke. The later bikes have 210.
We lower adventures on a regular basis without much difficulty. Combined with more appropriate springs and valving, the bike becomes a delight.
Check us out for advice or work.

Cheers

James
