HL 500 (lite) replica build

1980 Suzondaha? Yamahonduki? Hozukiha? HL 500 lite?
When its done I will know what it is but now it is just images floating through my aging brain. I need a winter project to maintain my sanity and this is cheaper than a therapist (it actually isn't but I tell my wife it is)

First a quick review of past therapy sessions er ohm bike restorations....

My r-65 HP1

Long gone but not forgotten....

My sons 1999 YZ 125 that has served us well and was actually sold this morning to a 13 year old boy that will enjoy it as much as my son did. I gave him a lifetime warranty on it because he paid for it himself.

Before,

After,

My 1980 RM 125,

More on this bike later....

And my 89 CR 125 that I just sold as well.

Loved all the bikes here but I tend to lose interest and look to something new (except my wife...30 years together which is a life sentence with no chance of parole).

I had a great time with the RM 125 but keeping them running has become harder and harder because of the age of the engine cases. Main bearings spin easy because of fatigue to the cases, the cases have become porous allowing air to leak in under pressure which is a death sentence to a 2 stroke. There are fixes out there which include re machining the bearing races and epoxy coating the insides of the cases.

So what to build next??? My inspiration piece.....

Love the look of the HL 500 but want to do a "lites" version, There are some other cool looks which I was able to find as well.

Love the fox shocks, pricey but would look nice!

All cool but am leaning towarrs the white and red Yamaha look....

All my other bike restoration have been period correct and maintaining stock look with minor artistic changes like black rims because it looks cool.

This one as of now is going to be a mix of parts that I feel are best for the project and the people that scoff at "incorrect" restorations can Blo...well not be into this build.

So was very close to starting with this,

1979 YZ 125

But for many reasons, questionable strength of frame, shock location that could limit engine placement and I found a better deal on this,

1980 RM 125 which I bought as a roller for $350.00

Having raced the 1980 RM 125 for a few years I am very familiar with the bike and always loved the handling

The bike no matter how well I build it will not handle like my modern bikes.

A friend built this 1980 CR 125/XR200 powered bike that I race with, This is pretty much what I am thinking along the lines of.

So so far I have the chassis,

and am on the hunt for a XR 200 motor, 76 Yamaha gas tank and seat and shocks. maybe Fox airs or Ohlins but either command big dollars!

I really shouldn't be following your bike build threads. They end up costing me a lot of money.

If you're going with an XR200 motor, have you considered looking at buying one of the new Lifan 200cc engines (Honda Knockoffs)? Full engine, cdi, carb, etc all for around 500$ shipped.

I've been toying with the idea of using one to replace the 175 engine in my Kawsaki F7, but am unsure if it will fit height wise.....and then the engine would be worth more than the bike.

I made the deal on the XR 200 so have the motor now but would consider one of those in the future. My guess is the Honda motor will last longer and stand up to the abuse of hauling my fat ass around and is costing me about the same and hopefully less if I can part out the rest of the bike.

So.... I bought this off Ebay, I sent $100 on Pay Pal and he is supposed to deliver to a shop I know around him (2 hrs from me) and over nighted cash to the owner of said shop.... we'll see how this goes. Bike is for sale less motor!

Hopefully this works out??? I also have not seen the roller RM yet but know the guy that is selling it to me (also 2 hrs away but the other way).

If I can get the bikes here I can start! PUMPED!!!
