San Diego - Palomar Mountain

Took a spin from San Diego (downtown proper) out to Palomar Mountain. I've never ridden it and i heard its a toughie, so I went Monday at 10AM and I was pretty much the only person on the whole mountain! I even had the Mother's Kitchen to myself - well, me and the cute little waitress ...

Nice little windy road. South Grade is a cool steep climb. Not a lot of places to stop off for a photo until I got here.

Mother's Kitchen at the top. Vegetarian place that is awesome; most people just bitch about it according to the waitress, I am veggie so it was rad.

Another nice little stop off. The freezing fog makes for bad scenery picz.

Riding down the "backside" East Grade. Nice view once I was out of the fog.

Didn't see any cows, but I did see a goat.

ON the backside there was a cool Panoramic Viewpoint. Apparently you can spot Bald Eagles there.

Nice. I like the photos. I rode there years ago and still remember it fondly. I was able to go during a weekday and had the place to myself too.

Great roads in this area, as you know. Just beyond the lake, is S2 to S22 to Montezuma Grade, and down to Borrego Springs & Anza Borrego SP.

Did you happen to catch Mesa Grande Rd? It's a nice little loop.

I may be in this area tomorrow...

Thanks for posting!

Don't forget about Nate Harrison Grade, the back(mostly dirt) way up the mountain. It comes off the 76 in Pauma Valley. Great views, and you can go back down on the asphalt if you wish and make a loop out of it

You've got tons of good stuff not too far away!

Buy a Benchmark mapbook(web, REI, bookstore). You'll spend hours studying it.

Yup, you need to check out those roads / routes others posted above. Especially on a weekday. Stop in at "The Hideout" too at the bottom of Mesa Grande. Can't speak for the Vegan side of their menu however.

Just to add a bit more to the mix...

South of Escondido, just west of I15, is Highland Valley Rd. I recently took this eastbound and out to Ramona for lunch(nice Subway btw). 78 out of Ramona up to 79 is a fun road! This will get you over to Mesa Grande Rd.

Get some pics. Have fun.

Yes, smart guy, it used to be named West Grade Rd
I think a better name from back then would be Weed Grade A Rd, or
Pauma Warpath Rd
