Is there are standard tripod mount (1/4 x 20 hole) on the Virb?

What are the helmet mounting options, and how does the lens orientation work?

It's an extra $6 for the tripod mount. It attaches to the VIRB cradle.

This is both of them together.

Helmet mounting options are pretty much like the GP - a glued base on your helmet and the camera attaches to that.

Not sure what you mean by lens orientation, but for the moment while the Smartphone app is not out yet, I guess you'll just have to eyeball it. There is no laser beam, if that's what you mean.

There is a level to help set it up, but it won't be of much help if it's on top of your helmet while said helmet's on your head.

The VIRB can be mounted on a shoulder with this harness. $40 at GPSCity. Click the image to see the page.

I'm sure if you ask nicely they'll fix you up with that.

Some cameras (Contour?) allow you to rotate the lens (either physically or through software), so the image is not dependent on the orientation of the camera.

I was hoping for some type of helmet mount that tucked the unit in against the helmet, and didn't have it out on an arm. Kind of like this (but hopefully smaller):

I noticed Garmin put a strip of foam on the uSD card clip, probably to stop it sliding on its own. Might be worth doing to any gps with this same clip on it.

Thanks for the info. Identical to the feature on the Drift Ghost. Now I am really interested in the Virb comparison.

Great review! I'm pretty sure this is the screen you have visible as you pilot your TIE fighter through the trench run, trying to catch that damn rebel Skywalker...

Now that you mention it, it does look like the Dork Farces video game.

What's your point? Google + automatically made a composite of three images into the one you posted.

I hadn't noticed but one of the mounts connects the VIRB mounting system to GoPro components!

Wow, that makes sense, and saves me a lot of money buying new parts.

i was going to ask about the mounts. I have GP mounts all over my gear and the chesty, etc. Would hate to have to buy/stick all new mounts all over my gear again..

overall what's you impression of the mounts?

I will probably pick up a monterra early next year, and if that goes well, maybe Virb 2 if they have one out by then. :)

I think you're going to have a little trouble putting this on the chesty since it's longer than the GP. It can be done, of course, with arms extending out the front but it's going to be sticking out a good 4".

Overall I'm impressed with the material they used to make the cradle and mounts. The mounts have teeth in the engagement area and that may keep them from moving. The knobs are smaller and not as easy to tighten as the GP version but the teeth in the mounts might mean you don't need to tighten the mounts as much as the GP version.

I've got at least 6 broken GP mounts in a year's use of them. Maybe I'm clumsy but they seem really brittle.
