69 Honda Z50A Minitrail Build

Well with winter ticking away it's time to start on the restoration of my fathers 69 Z50A. We are setting up to haul two matching Z50's along with us on our VW Camper Bus, my fathers back doesn't hold up well to walking very far so this will be a great way to cruise around car shows etc next summer. We purchased this bike earlier this summer and it has a few issues, paint isn't correct (not candy colored and looks flat) and the clutch isn't working properly. Time to tear into this baby and get it ready for spring :-)

The plan is to strip all the metal parts down to bare metal, then prime/paint with the correct candy paint. All parts that show wear etc will be restored or replaced as needed. I'll be fabricating a engine and frame stand soon along with jigs to hold the parts for paint.

Starting to disassemble, forgot to take a before picture so a few items have already been removed in this pic. No time to find my good camera...Iphone pics will have to do :-)

Bearings and seals removed....the grease was nasty! New bearings/seals will be going back.




Gathering up parts for the ultrasonic cleaner. I'll be doing the cleaning/sand blasting of the painted parts later this week.




My 69 Z50A. This one is a older resto with correct paint but it's been ridden and needs a hand full of things done to it as well, I'll tackle this one after we finish up my fathers.

Save Al's sticker....should be easy to remove with a little heat and a Q-tip dipped in either paint thinner or Methyl Hydrate. Then stick it between some wax or parchment paper sheets.

Later on, go to Michael's or such,buy the Krylon "easy tack???" that's a releasable adhesive and re-install the sticker.

That is nice. I'd leave it original with only a mechanical refurb. If you can save that decal, you are not a mere mortal.

Well I tried to save Al's sticker this am but it just isn't happening. I'm afraid all the years on the bike have made it one with the frame now. I tried the heat gun method as well as some different types of solvents...in the end the sticker is just to well stuck and only wants to come off in tiny pieces.

No Suby repower this time lol.

Not exactly sure on hauling with the Westy yet. I could easily fabricate a front and rear rack setup for them but not sure about the added weight. The Westy is already rear heavy when loaded and the extra weight out on a rack would make it even worse. I've looked into air bags to help level with the added weight but there arn't many good options out there.

I'll either come up with something or they will be on a small trailer behind the bus :-)

Yeah I want them to be 100% stock. The original frame paint is to far gone to save and the tank/headlight was repainted the wrong color so I'll repaint everything the correct color then start re-assembly.

I'm a big fan of leaving stuff original if possible but this one is at the point where restoration is the best option.

Here's a shot of my 1970 Honda Z50A Monkey Bike, this was a Japanese market only bike that was brought over to the US at some point. It's 100% original down to the tires! This one won't be touched.

Yep, me to!
That "Al's Honda - Triumph, Hutchinson KS" sticker is kinda freaking me out because I swear I think my Mini Trail from way back when (that I rode constantly for years) had that exact same sticker on it. If your bike was blue I'd swear it was mine!

That is nice. Removable fork, signals, horn, speedometer, center stand, tool kit, side cover, heel-toe shifter, lack of rear handbrake, steering lock differentiate the domestic Z50Z from the Z50A, but what is that in front of the chain adjuster?
