For the record I'm in with my son Chris. Really looking forward to it. Hope there are less wildfires this year.

Glacier Park revisted

Given the nature of the discussions over the first night, Timmer and I thought it best to review some the first night's camping situation.

The first night on this ride is unique as we will be in one of the nation's premier national parks smack dap in the middle of prime tourist season. There is an abundance of camping and lodging opportunities in the vicinity of Apgar/West Glacier both inside and outside of the Park, but a look at the Park's various campgrounds prior year status situations indicates that even the first-come-first-serve campsites fill up as early as noon for the last week of July in prior years.

Several inmates have proceeded to obtain reservations for either Fish Ck CG or Apgar CG which are the only two which take reservations. Self included. Single sites are restricted to two vehicles so some inmates may be able to share. Stealth camping in the Park will get you booted. Outside the Park doesn't present the best solution for stealth camping either as the accessible roads near the Park tend to be on non-public grounds. There is a lot of alternate lodging available both in the Park and outside - commercial, but again these would be best to get early reservations.

It is doubtful that following nights will pose similar problems as the locations are A) much more remote off the typical tourist route, B) not on a weekend, and C) have close by backup or significant stealth camping on open USFS ground.

Make your plans accordingly, and let the adventure begin!

Glacier Park Revisited

Ron, that's a good summary of the situation.

I have a reservation for Saturday night at Fish Creek next to Ron and I have one space available that I can share. First come, first serve by PM. There is NO cost. [The spot has been claimed by KINSMAN].

nice Koa in west glacier and St mary. as well as a campground on the hill above the gas station in st mary. I think there is one north of town a few miles as well. But with the name being "chewing backbone campground" i couldn't talk the wife into staying there.

Also St. Mary lake campground in the park is reserveable .

FYI.....No gas at wise river. I see your map has a gas pump there.

From Melrose to wise river, past the kilns, is a great ride.

We'll have to focus on Butte and Grasshopper Lodge in that case. Next gas will be Salmon, ID.

Good breakfast at the Grasshopper and cool airplane propeller with crash backstory in the lodge.

I got to stay in one of the Kozy Kabins at the St. Mary's KOA years ago, and it was great. This is going to be a really scenic, way coolio ride!

Wallowa, my Good Man...

...one thing I've learned from being a carrion feeding buzzard, and that's to "respect the carrion!" That's where we're all headed, eventually... hehehe

No Buzzard Gangin'... just good-hearted circling of roadkill, and looking to put in that extra mile toward the horizon. Hope I get to make it on this no-doubt epic summer extravaganza across the Wild Montana Beyonderlands.

Looking forward to meeting new co-riders as well, God willing and the tires stay round.

All the best,

Stovey

ps - Wansfel - hot soaking at Elkhorn, right? I've never been, nor to the ski area skiing. I'm lame....
