Had not. They definitely got #1 right. That team more stacked than any team in my lifetime.

The top few make sense. UCLA will be chuffed to see themselves that high. Georgia at 11 feels like a reach. Nobody really knows what they have at QB. The offensive line was supposed to be a strength this year and it wasn't. Three of them are gone, but it's unknowable whether their replacements will be any better. Unless the talent is just plain rotten, though, you have to figure the maturing young players defense will be better.

Michigan finds its scapegoat, fires the offensive coordinator.

Interesting to see USC at #2 when their title was "vacated", Reggie Bush had his Heisman stripped, and Pete Carroll ended up having to get out of dodge. Success at next level? Leinert is a monster bust and Bush is maybe sorta OK.

Absolutely. There were so many successful pros on that team, there entire backfield were starters in the NFL. I cant recollect the exact statistic, but they were one of the only teams to beat consecutive (not sure how many in a row) top 10 (or 5)opponents. Sorry for the vagueness but hopefully you get the drift.

Best defenses nebraska might be there with '92
and '11 Bama.

Important to remember that the Bush stuff wasn't a recruiting violation. He was there legally. He did stupid stuff after he got there. So the team was a legit team. Also, Reggie Bush is better than you allow for in the NFL.

So they're cynically buying 2-3 winning seasons, at the cost of their image and their self respect.

As for bigger schools, don't kid yourself. They're every bit as grubby and lacking in self-respect as Louisville. If Petrino wins, you really think a Tennessee, a Florida, a Miami wouldn't hire him?
That's what second tier teams do. Regardless of their recent history, Louisville isn't considered a prime coaching gig. Anyone they hired would be likely to leave in 2-3 years anyway. Their other choices can't say that they've had a 41-6 record in that situation. As was said on one of the talking head shows yesterday, he's the devil they know.
How long was Charlie Strong in Louisville?
