My wife left this morning in her Jeep Liberty for Portland, OR and has decided that Fort Dodge, IA will be her home for the night.

Driving the fuel availability point home, my wife got suck in a Merriman, NE last night because she didn't have enough gas to get to the next town and the only gas station in town had closed over an hour before she came across it a bit after 6 PM. She's still waiting for gas as the station doesn't open till 6 AM.

Another not uncommon problem in less populated areas of the west is power outages. It can happen at any time of the day and you can't get gas even if the station is open. I experienced this in Utah a couple of weeks ago and have also experiienced it more than once in Nebraska.

It gives you an opportunity to interact with the local population.

I enjoy interacting with locals.

Unfortunately for her between the sidewalks having been rolled up already, the rain and the small population, there was no place to interact with people. She filled her time with reading, updating her blog, FB and sleeping.

She's filled her tank and was very smart for not trying to get to the next town, she would have never made it.

Just read the whole thread. Dude, you're my kind of crazy.

Good luck. I look forward to reading about your trip. It should give me the push I need to take my KLR for a real ride.

Summer plans being monkeyed with. Still hoping to get this ride in, however the trip back will be completely different.

My vacation is locked in, but my wife will be home already. Yeah, looking at salt free Astros.

I'm fully locked into this thread now, keep the updates coming. If you want a riding buddy, I can probably ride my DT 250 with you from concrete to bow since I'm on Whidbey Island.

Well, my wife arrived in Tacoma too late to look at one of the vans I found online and she left too early. She just entered Idaho.

Might have to get internet buddies to inspect some vans for me.

I so want a reason to still do this ride.

Guess I should update.

So far I've repaired the metal inner fender with a big hammer, the plastic outer fender with a heat gun and have a utility trailer light housing as a temporary tail light. I need to true my rear wheel and replace the shocks. Last Sunday was the first day riding the bike in a couple weeks and it felt good to be back on it.

This trip has been put on hold as my wife returned early from her WWOOF volunteer opportunities in the Pacific Northwest.

I was going to look at a couple Astros while I was out there and with her back early was using them as an excuse to still complete this ride, but both vans I was talking to the owners of have sold them. I'm checking the ads almost daily, but I'm not finding much due to me being so specific in what I'm looking for and my current budget. Right now it looks like I'll be putting this ride off till sometime next year so I can afford more van, but I'm determined this ride is going to happen.
