Warped 2006 4runner rotors 200 miles....

Hi guys,

Got a set of BFG AT KO's put on the 06' 4runner two weeks ago, new brake pads and rotors (100k + miles on the OEM brake gear) last week from same shop (been using them for years).

Pedal initially soft and gave me a bit of concern. Today squealing like a pig.

Took it back, mechanic quickly identifies warped rotors... The new ones. He figures he did not wash the coating off the rotors when he did the brakes, I can say that's a pretty sure bet, I was there, parts showed up and on they went.

They seem fine now (the new rotors from today - time will tell), however I was kinda surprised that they would warp to the point of hitting the guards in such a short period based on not cleaning the cosmoline off. A wooden feel, yea, perhaps, but a significant warp?

Anyway, no coin off me, just a couple hours...

Any brake gurus care to make observation?

Horrid Chinese rotors are a great place to start looking. ALL the parts suppliers push them, very little choice. NAPA PREMIUM rotors are a bit better. Get OEM Toyota rotors and be done with it.
If he truly didn't wash the rotors at installation, you need a new mechanic. Yes, that can cause pulsation/warpage. Enough to hit the sheet metal guard? No. That's something else.
You didn't mention anything silly like going oversize tires, different rims with different offset, etc. Nice and stock, right?

How did he torque the lug nuts down?

Uneven or excessive lug nut torque can cause near-term rotor warping.

Thanks guys, yes nice and stock. I was pretty surprised, on how fast and severe the warping was.

As far as the guy making a mistake, Meh, these things happen. Honest local tire shop, mistakes get made, they hold themselves accountable, can't ask for much more.

Yep. Had warped rotors on my Camry. Swapped rotors and all was good, until I let a tire monkey get his hands on it. I could feel the pedal pulsing as soon as I got it back. I un-gorilla'd the lug nuts and the pedal went back to normal.

I just put NAPA's top pads and rotors on my Silverado, they fade really easily.

My buddy's Silverado same thing. He said he's going to back to GM pads, wat better bite, and cant get them to fade

I always clean new rotors, but I'm curious how not cleaning them can lead to warpage?

Glad you asked... The cosmoline will begin to wear off... unevenly. Then the pads will be doing the slide-grab-slide-grab, unevenly. The "grab" portions of the rotor will heat, while the "slide" portions will not... thus begins the madness.

Yup, many, many pads available today are designed for low dust, low noise... at the expense of friction coefficient. I only use Performance Friction brand Carbon Metallic pads. A huge UPGRADE in braking performance over OEM (in most cases). http://www.performancefriction.com/p...rake-pads.aspx

I had frozen rotors not sure if it's the same but common as a cracked dash. Other than that my 04 4x4 has been flawless. Info @ Toyota-4runner.org.

NAPA Premium rotors are made in China. Even the Bosch top of the line rotors are made in China... The majority of OE rotors are made in... China...

Never said they WEREN'T Chinese, the "premium" just a small step up the garbage ladder, quality wise. That was/is my point, HARD for the repair shop to source any quality parts. The Meyle rotors I get for the veedub are German made, great quality/longevity. (3 MKIV's, 500,000 220,000 and 190,000 miles.)

OEM pads in my '07 Tundra were the culprit. Lots of pedal pressure, friction and wheel shutter at 50K. Rotors turned with Akebono pads improved braking a lot.

Ive had nothing but problems with my subie brakes. OEM ones sharted to shudder, got new replacement ones (i forgot what brand but they were'nt exactly cheap) and good pads that make a lot of goddamn dust. 1000 miles later, the shudder began again. Cut the OEM rotors problem solved... for 1000 miles.

I'm so goddamn tired of shitty quality parts.
