I think that is the reason most bikes we see in Tuareg they are lightweight enduro bikes converted to cover long distances. Heavy bikes just suck the life out of you to pick them up multiple times...

Yes, it's cause and effect - the more riders who bring a simple converted enduro (with typcially just a larger fuel tank, skid-plate and bar-mounted nav gear), the tougher the Organisation have to make the Profi class each year just to give them a challenge!

In that regard, I overheard one rider say it felt more like the Roof of Africa than a regular rally.

The 'Amateur' route follows more closely the [Profi] car route, and to be honest, is a better bet for those riders looking to take a bigger or certainly fully-faired full-fat Rally bike to the Tuareg Rallye... there are a couple of guys on brand new KTM 450RFRs this year - and I bet they have tears in their eyes right about now (either that or exceptionally large bank balances!).

In the past it appears there has be a stigma amongst some competitors regarding the term 'Amateur', despite the fact that even that road book can be pretty tough on a large bike - but that is the way the Orga continue to phrase it.

It was suggested last year that the 'Amateur' class be renamed 'Rally' (and the Moto Profi as 'Enduro') - if only to avoid the stigma, but the Orga feel there is sufficient scope within the existing categories to suit all entrants.

As I mentioned a few posts back, they did hint at an additional 'Moto Profi Heavy' class (for rally bikes and twin cylinders) that would miss out the really gnarly technical sections, but still require riders to complete all the laps in the sand stages for example - but this year at least it seems they are riding exactly the same road book as the regular Moto Profi competitors after all.
