MAKE SURE - whatever you do - to secure the ramp to the truck before you try to wheel the bike up. If the surface is just a little bit slippery, the ramp will slide the moment the bike hits it and you'll ram the bike into the truck (like one of the guys with the quad in the fail video). I did it once with a GS and it wasnt fun.
Just take one of your tie downs, put one side under the bumper, loop it over the top of the ramp and attach the tie down to the other side and tighten till the ramp and truck are one.

and if you are going to screw it up, make sure to get a video of it and post it here so we can make fun of you.

I use a 3/4 webbing loop to attach to the bike (handle bars and frame).
The loops are old climbing gear...slings.
Use short bungie loops with a ball to keep the loose ends of the ratchets under control. Home Depot item.

Also, you should try to secure the bike from moving left and right, rather than trying to ratchet it "down" so it compresses the forks. Not many people have problems with fork leaks when they're transporting their bike, but some do. I don't think it's common, but why take the chance.
Those are good until you have a bike that has heated grips, cruise control, etc. By far and away the best place to strap the front of the bike is from the front shocks extender tubes at the point where they meet the triple lower brace...

I keep a coil of 1/4 inch polypropylene rope under the seat, for an emergency tow (so far not used for that purpose) and occasions like this, after cutting in six pieces with a pocketknife:

Good enough for the 800 km / 500 mi 12 hour drive from the Laos border to Bangkok in a rented truck driven by a local driver. The bike never shifted.

The trick is to use the right knot--the "trucker's hitch." A Newfie deckhand taught it to me when I took my motorcycle on the ferry to Newfoundland and I have never forgotten it; he tied the bike down on the ferry deck so tight I thought the rope would cut the seat in half. An amazing and easy knot, well documented on the web.

Anyone with any knowledge of hydraulics will agree with you, which I do. There is no way tying down the front or rear of the bike would blow seals. If the seals go while transporting they were bad to begin with and just finally crapped out.

About the only thing I do is let up on the straps if the bike is going to sit there overnight, tied down on a bike plaform, or the like. Odds are the springs won't sack out at all, but I guess it's just something I do - superstition.

thanks mark, an interesting thing about springs is that they will not sag from being either stretched or compressed when in there normal working range. use cycling is what makes springs weak. a common myth is that leaving a guns magizine loaded will make the spring weak. not so. think of an engines valve springs. some are always in full compression when not running. doesn't hurt them a bit. however the longer they run the weaker they get.

+1 To the last two posts.....and I just hauled my Daytona back and forth all over the damn place. It had a little weepage on the lower after two weeks and a 5,000 ish miles in the back of a truck.

The only thing you have to really watch is that if you use a wheel chock that if you crank down to much on the front end you can get you brakes into the side of the chock ...which is bad juju for your rotors.

.....OH and if you use canyon dancers/D-extenders or whatnot go to you local shop and bumb crate straps, 9/10 times they will just give them away, and they are usually good quality ratchet straps with no hooks. I've found Harley shops are the best, they are usually the longest and heaviest duty for some reason

I have wheel chocks bolted to the floor in the van, and on the trailer. A couple of winch straps from web tie extenders on the handlebars to recessed tie down hooks in the floor work well for non-BMW telelever bikes. The Beemer ties go to the top of the fork crossover in front and to secure frame points in back. BTW, I always use 4 straps, even with the dirt bikes, better safe than dragging the bike down the street with one tie down still hooked on.

I used to use two 2x8's with Home Depot ramp kits on the ends, but now use my aluminum atv ramp (folds in half). A riding bud had a Bed Buddy mounted on his pickup. If I ever get another pickup, that is what I'd get. He was always the first one loaded up and ready to go:
