Do it!! We've ridden San Juan Island, Orcas Island, where on both, we stayed overnight, and we took a day trip to Lopez Island, hoping to find an old friend of mine. I live on an island now. The big island of Hawaii.

My memories of San Juan and Orcas go way back to when I was 3-4 years old (I'm now 60), when we used to go camping there. I scootered these islands on a Honda 49cc Ruckus. Underpowered, but still doable. On the scooter trips, we would either stay at bed and breakfasts, or, on Orcas, the very cool old Orcas Hotel.

The boat I usually drive was taken off the schedule for maintenance yesterday and today. I thought I would get some scooter time in today, since it looked like I'd have some free time... I have to stop thinking like that. I got called in to work with the canvas guy on a new helm cover - wound up taking all afternoon, so I didn't get any scooter time in again today.

I am scheduled to do some crew training tomorrow, both here in Friday Harbor (morning) and later at Roche Harbor. If the timing works, I'll be taking the scooter across the island to get to Roche. Commuting!

We'll see how that all plays out.

Jim

I'm definitely going to try to squeeze in at least one mad scooter trip to one of the islands one of these days - hopefully on this Derbi -IF- I can get it runny and safe. Have spent time on a few of the islands over the years, always took the cage, always loved it. On a nice sunny, humidity free PacNW day, the scooter element would increase the fun factor significantly.

What boat are you running? My dad was driving one up there a few years ago and my grandfather has lived there since the 90's.

A scooter would have been awesome to have during my visits!

The company I work for has an operation in Friday Harbor and one in Roche Harbor. I drive boats out of both locations (generally, Kittiwake in FH or SeaHawk in RH). Glad to have the scoots here for the commute between Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor... and even better for some fun on our days off.

As the season progresses, the roads will get thicker with traffic coming on the island by ferry. Suzie's Mopeds rents 50cc scoots (Kymco) and the side-by-side Scoot Coupe (http://www.scootcoupe.com/).

We have enjoyed our scoots for "urban adventure cruising" in Phoenix, but these two lane island roads with speed limits of 45 mph (or less), twisties, hills, and the occasional straight-away, are great for scootin'.

My favorite shot of the day, too, Bob. One of the few places on that fun road where you could get a great view behind the curve. When we got to the top, the Blonde said, "Good thing we got the season park pass - we're coming back here again, just for this ride!" Big smiles.

Off to America (that's what a friend here calls it when you go to the mainland)...

http://captnjim.blogspot.com/2014/06...fairhaven.html

Put the scoots on the ferry to the mainland and headed north on some curvy roads.

A preview...

Best wishes,
Jim
