Thanks for the kind words about the map link I posted.

I just added another GeoMAC layer that shows historical fire perimeters. If you are trying to figure out how to play with the layers, click the "About" link in the upper left corner of the map.

Highway 20 closed again

A new wave of urgent level 3 (get out now) evacuations, fire has grown to 243,000 acres, and a total of 150 homes now destroyed as of 3:45pm, according to this Wenatchee World article: http://www.wenatcheeworld.com/news/2...all-victories/

The good news is that some humidity is expected in the next two days.

With the map that Joseph posted, you can use the wind layer to see the direction the fire is moving, and the newly evacuated areas to the northeast.

I'll be making a trip to the PNW next month, and while I may have to detour some of my routes due to the fires, That really pales in comparison to the hardships brought on to these communities by these fires. Simply devastating and heartbreaking to see, I just can't imagine what those folks are going through right now. Prayers to everyone affected.

Sad news...

From a KIRO update:

"The Carlton wildfire complex has claimed the life of a retired marine who had a heart attack trying to protect his home. The wildfire has burned 150 homes. One week after it began, the fire is now nearly 240,000 acres and is only 2 percent contained."

This was a retired Washington State Trooper and former U.S. Marine Vietnam veteran. Rest in peace Robert Koczewski.

One of my best buddies from high school is now a bartender in Kirkland, but his mom still lives in the Methow, in a house that the family built. All through school they lived in a single wide trailer, while the dad handbuilt this house up on a hill above highway 20, between Twisp and Carlton. It took forever but he finally completed it after the the boys were out of high school. Shortly after that, their dad died of cancer.

Anyway, on thursday I see a Facebook post from my friend. This was after the phones had gone out throughout the valley: "If anybody sees my mom, tell her that her boys are on their way."

He and his younger brother were driving towards the fire to try and save that house. You can imagine what it meant to them. It was right in the fire path at that point and pretty much doomed. I think they stayed up all night trying to keep their "defensible zone" wetted down. To make a long story short, at the last minute this happened:

This pilot made a couple of passes, dumping retardant and saving the home. Seeing one of these planes in the sky must be pretty special when you're there on the ground. Here is a video of another pilot dropping the payload, can't get the video to embed but it's worth a look: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=750871954956098

A friend's mom just posted this an hour ago:

Incredible hail storm just passed through Winthrop. Rivers of rain and marble sized hail piling up like snow. Winthrop Inn is on fire.
Turns out that only an outbuilding, and not the Inn itself, was on fire. But still. WTF!

I'm North of the fire, but we must have done something to piss off Mother Nature. The storm came through here about 6, and I've never seen anything like it. Torrential rain (probably a good thing) with the lightning and thunder . I lost 11 trees, a few over 2' diameter. Thankfully none hit my house or outbuildings.
