Rode through today...

Wanted to ride through the valley and finally got a chance today. More tourists in Winthrop than I expected, which is good. Smoke in the air but not much sign of the fire until I got past Twisp. These pics were shot from the Highway; some places seemed green and healthy and other places looked like a WWI movie set with scorched earth from horizon to horizon. Can't imagine the ferocity of a fire like this.

Now through Friday, at least around Wenatchee. On the radio I heard "...up to 20 possible new starts."

Wow.

Just west of Cashmere. Rained a bit last night.

We'll be up your way next weekend, trying out the new canoe.

A little rain here this AM - but hot this afternoon (looking nervously at sky but hard to gauge the clouds with all the smoke ) - enjoy your new canoe!

Here's a another version of that shop I took a couple of days after the event, 81Forest. I spend a lot of time in the Methow Valley - I still can't quite fathom the immensity of the damage. Some of the hills look like someone took a blow torch to them. Stopped with some friends whose cabin burned in French Creek (near the town of Methow) and it was weird to see how the fire burned right down the roots of the trees - leaving hollowed out tunnels the shape of the root structure. Just uncanny.

Svizzerams, you take excellent photos! Wish I had more time to check things out, but I was on a big loop from Seattle in one day. We lived on a piece of land when I was in high school, up Texas Creek in Carlton. I really would have liked to ride out there and see what was left of it. That whole area got completely torched, according to the owner of the Carlton General Store- who rides a KTM by the way .

I took a few other pics and put them in this ride report: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1001065

Be very careful out there. Some of those taproots will stay burning, underground, for a long time. They can burn laterally under the soil as well. When we were doing rehab work for wildlife (wells, feeders) after fires, we probed the path we were taking as if we were in a minefield.
Kinda sobering when your shovel goes into 'solid' ground and reveals a barbecue pit. If you drop into one it can be very bad to lethal, depending on size, and seems like a bad way to go.

Weather- thought I saw lightning east of Cashmere last night, and about 9:30 it was raining nicely. Still damp out, which is good. Did anybody see the Grant County Fairgrounds evacuation, or the haboob outside Ritzville?

Rained steadily last night in Chelan - pictures of the haboob were amazing. Good advice on the post-fire terrain hazards too. I'll let my friends know as well so they can be aware when they start doing re-hab work.

Rain yesterday was welcome. Some friends got a bit of a scare... Debris slide across their land at 2 am! Scary enough in daylight!
Not sure if I'm off Level One yet but I'm feeling more relaxed with the rain and lack of lightening in our area.
Funny to be on Level One... We were never on Level One before our house burned.

Lots of small mudslides all around Lake Chelan - hard steady rain with massive lightening - but no wind. Clearing up now. I've never looked so forward to the first snowfall in all my years.
