I think this is a big problem for scooters. Scooters are really made to ride around town and they are without peer for doing this IMO. OTOH, this is where it's most dangerous to ride because of all the cages. When was the last time you saw someone tooling around town on a Vespa wearing full leathers and a helmet?

If you wear full gear on a scooter you'll look like a dweeb and if you don't you'll feel like one after your first face plant.

Yup.

I've puzzled over this frequently. I don't get on my GS without my modified ATGATT (I use armored or reinforced jeans often in the summer but otherwise all the usual battle stuff). However, yes, I confess: T-shirt and jeans on the scoot sometimes. (gloves & helmet)

I do wear the full deal on the long rides and if I'm heading into heavy traffic. But I fully realize that I"m being hypocritical about ATGATT, and that the cager traffic in town is one of my biggest threats.

Part of the appeal of scootering is the short-hop rides where you can go from post office to bank to grocery store, jump off the bike and prop it outside the door, toss the helmet on the floorboard, and go inside. With my quick-connect strap on the helmet, I'm literally moving again in 10 seconds. Kick the bike and go.

I suppose colder weather will help solve this, but still...

Anyone else sorta grappling with the same thing?

True story, it happened about an hour ago.

On my commute in to work I pass by the entrance of UCSC as I head up into the Santa Cruz Mountains. I pull up next to a cute young girl on a scooter wear'n a skirt, clogs, no gloves and light jacket with the state required DOT helmet. It is about 40 degrees out and I point to her legs (they are very cute) and give the universal shiver motion and say, you look cold. She very sweetly chatters back, “yes I am”. Before the signal changes I find out she has had the scooter 1 week and this is her first "commute" on it. I politely suggest at least some gloves and shoes that will stay on if she has to put her foot down. I usually try not to give unsolicited advice to fellow motorists. She agreed and asked for suggestions of where to get them. I was pleased with her response and gave her a few quick suggestions and wished her well as the light changed.

The interaction made me think that as a fellow rider and MSF coach I could/should do something to help with what looks like a no-gear-scooter-new-rider thing go’n on in my town. I decided I would contact our local beat reporter, who I know well, from our local paper and suggest her paper consider do'n a feature on where to get training, etc for all the new riders on the road as a result of gas prices.
